The Department of English in the College of Humanities & Social Sciences seeks applicants for a tenure-track assistant professor faculty position beginning August 1, 2022, in Multi-Ethnic Literatures of the United States (MELUS) prior to 1900, specific area of specialization open.  The selected candidate will be responsible for teaching courses in the candidate’s area of expertise, maintaining scholarly productivity, and participating in service at the department, college, and university levels.

With thirty-four full-time faculty members, the Department of English offers a B.A. with emphases in both Literature and Language and in Journalism as well a dual degree that leads to both a B.A. in English and a B.S.Ed. in Secondary Education. The department also supports an on-campus M.A. (with literature and rhetoric/composition tracks) and an online M.A. designed for in-service language arts teachers. The department houses a myriad of impressive student publications including the Spectator (student newspaper), Omnino (undergraduate research journal), On Tap (general-interest magazine), and Odradek (literary magazine).

RESPONSIBILITIES

Teaching in Multi-Ethnic Literatures of the United States (MELUS) prior to 1900, specific area of specialization is open.  Candidate must be able to teach the first half of the general American Literature survey (pre-1865) as well as General Education World Literature course.  The bulk of the 4-4 teaching load will be in designing and teaching courses in Multi-Ethnic American Literatures (both broadly conceived introductory classes and more specialized upper-level and graduate classes) as well as offering courses that could be cross-listed with VSU’s Africana Studies program (and, potentially, also cross-listed with our Women’s and Gender Studies program).  The ideal candidate will also have secondary interests in one or more of the following: Digital Humanities, Medical Humanities, Gender and Sexuality Studies, and/or Environmental Literature.

In addition to teaching, the successful candidate will be required to maintain scholarly productivity and provide service at the department, college, and university levels.

  • PhD in English with a concentration in Multi-Ethnic Literatures of America;
  • Demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching and learning, as well as scholarship;
  • Commitment to diversity and inclusion.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • A record of effective teaching appropriate to the applicant’s career stage;
  • Ability to work effectively in a collaborative setting;
  • A record of mentoring students of diverse backgrounds in experiential learning such as undergraduate research.
