Sports Information Assistant

Position Details
The Office of Communications shines a spotlight on the people and programs of Wesleyan University to enhance its reputation as a leader in liberal arts education. In so doing, it serves as a partner with units across campus, providing expertise in brand management, strategic communication, media relations, digital and social media strategy, website development, content training and strategy, print and online publications and videography and photography.

Reporting to the Director of Sports Information within the Office of University Communications, the Sports Information Assistant will be an integral member of Athletics’ day-to-day operations. The position provides communications and public relations support to the Director of Athletics, other athletics administrators, coaches, and student-athletes.

The Wesleyan Athletic Department, located in the Freeman Athletic Center, is a member of the prestigious New England Small College Athletic Conference ( NESCAC ). Wesleyan sponsors 30 varsity sports and believes athletics plays an integral part in a Wesleyan student–athlete’s liberal arts education. Highly trained and dedicated faculty-coaches, administrators and staff work collaboratively and tirelessly to assist student-athletes in reaching their academic and athletic goals. Sports Information, as part of the Office of University Communications, shares the outcomes of our athletics contests and highlights the achievements of our student-athletes.

The Sports Information Assistant’s responsibilities will include:
  • Serving as the primary in-game statistician (utilizing PrestoStats Entry and NCAA Live Stats) in conjunction with the SID , either as a spotter, entering data or another role.
  • Serving as the point-person for coordinating sports webcasting and online video streaming for Wesleyan’s varsity sports.
  • Under the direction of the Director of Sports Information, oversee the process of organizing and managing a program for staffing athletics events with sports information personnel at competitive events hosted by the University as well as staffing or providing a liaison, as necessary, for away competitive events.
  • Overseeing and training student workers.
  • Serving as public address announcer when necessary.
  • Helping oversee and creating content for the Wesleyan Athletics social media accounts (Instagram, Twitter, Facebook).
  • Helping keep the Athletic website information up to date.
  • Writing post-game stories/summaries for the web, social media and outside media.
  • Writing feature stories on student-athletes for the football program, the Alumni Magazine, athletics website and other outlets as requested.
  • Taking photos of live game action, team shots, and community service events.
  • Producing digital home game programs.
  • Serving as a media liaison at events as needed.
  • Attending and participating in professional development opportunities as requested.
  • Evening, weekend work and travel will be required depending on games schedule, events and location.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned by the Director of Sports Information.

This position is required to work on campus in Middletown Connecticut.This position is part-time (benefits eligible) and works 34 hours per week for 52 weeks.

(Relocation assistance to CT is available for those who qualify).
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree and experience as a writer in sports journalism, sports information management, sports reporting, marketing, public relations, communication or related field.

Student experience will be considered.

Familiarity in a number of software applications such as InDesign, Excel, Photoshop, Word, or other similar applications.

Experience working with members of the media, computers, web, video and social media platforms.

Effective communication skills and interpersonal skills.

Excellent attention to details

Must be able to work a flexible schedule to include some evenings and weekends, plus occasional travel within the U.S.

Ability to walk or drive on campus to various sporting events with equipment bag(s) with or without reasonable accommodation as needed.

Ability to set up in designated area (some may include stadium stairs) break down and travel back to office to store equipment.

Will need valid CT license or ability to obtain one.

Demonstrated commitment to work within a diverse environment and interact openly with individuals of different backgrounds.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Understanding of Presto Stats Entry, StatCrew, and NCAA LiveStats
  • Understanding of SIDEARM Sports
  • Well-versed in a variety of sports and an avid fan of many.
