Scope of Job:
Located in South Texas, UTRGV boasts over 32,000 students including a Medical School. The Rio Grande Valley enjoys high national rankings for quality of life and noted as one of the safest communities in the country. UTRGV Athletics will soon feature 18 Division I programs with the addition of women's swimming and diving in Fall 2024 and FCS Football in Fall 2025. As a result, UTRGV Athletics is currently undergoing $85M in athletics construction and experiencing record momentum across the institution and community.
Responsible for leading and managing the development component of the Athletics Department. Devises a comprehensive strategy to expand philanthropic support for the organization and establishes and monitors annual goals and objectives. Responsible for the general oversight of assigned sport programs, serves as a senior member of the leadership team, and as the chief fundraising officer for the Department.



Description of Duties:
  • Identifies, cultivates, solicits, and stewards individuals and organizations to make philanthropic gifts to the UTRGV Athletics Department.
  • Develops, implements, and evaluates comprehensive fundraising efforts to generate financial gifts to the Department.
  • Works closely with Vice President & Director of Athletics to plan, develop, organize, implement, lead and evaluate the organization’s short and long-term strategic direction for garnering private resources, focusing on both long- and short-term results (i.e., driving quarterly results, prospecting, closing gifts, etc.).
  • Manages fundraising activities of the Department, develops a comprehensive strategy to expand philanthropic and external support for the organization, and establishes annual goals and objectives.
  • Supervises and manages a development team focused on an integrated approach to maximize the development and growth of intercollegiate athletics revenues across all fundraising areas and programs.
  • Works closely with the Executive Vice President of Advancement and the Office of Institutional Advancement serving as the direct liaison for Athletics, providing high-level communication and collaboration with the identification, cultivation, and solicitation of donor prospects.
  • Communicates department-wide fundraising strategy including a close working relationship with head coaches and their respective sport administrators.
  • Serves as the sport administrator for designated programs assigned by the Director of Athletics; providing leadership and support to coaches and student-athletes and managing day-to-day needs and issues.
  • In conjunction with the Director of Athletics for assigned sports, coordinates and approves team schedules for practice and competition and coordinates specific game dates among assigned sports teams.
  • Reports regularly to the Director of Athletics regarding the health, progress and needs of assigned sports, and facilitates the involvement of the Director of Athletics at appropriate times.
  • Manages all home competitions for appointed teams.
  • Assists the Director of Athletics by executing initiatives and special projects.
  • Participates in developing a culture of excellence across the department, determining, and guiding strategic direction, and positively engaging department staff in change and growth.
  • Fosters a positive, entrepreneurial, and high performing revenue team culture focused on the donor along with first-class event presentation and fan experience.
  • Understands, reviews, develops, and implements operating structure, systems, policies and procedures necessary to ensure success for all development activities, initiatives and donors associated with intercollegiate athletics.
  • Spearheads the creation of a development program to support Division I football, in particular, as it relates to access to parking, priority ticketing, and premium seating.
  • Analyzes and identifies ways to increase efficiency, improve levels of service and enhance profitability in all areas of responsibility.
  • Understands and implements compliance processes and assists with rules-education.
  • Serve as an ambassador of the University and its Athletics Department to all public entities with a premium placed on building community relationships.
  • Contributes to the overall success of intercollegiate athletics program by performing all other duties and responsibilities as assigned or identified as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

General supervision from the Vice President & Director of Athletics.

Supervision Given:
Supervises assigned professional, clerical and coaching staff.

Required Education:
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution of higher education.

Preferred Education:

Licenses/Certifications:
None.

Required Experience:
Five (5) years prior experience in revenue generation, external sales, advancement, management, including roles with extensive public facing focus experience.

Preferred Experience:
More than five (5) years prior experience in athletics administration, including in revenue generation, especially fundraising and ticket operation and sales. Knowledge of fundraising compliance policies and regulations as applicable to the University and IRS.

Equipment:
Standard office equipment including Microsoft Office programs, as well as familiarity with applicable database systems.

Working Conditions:
Needs to be able to successfully perform all required duties. Usual office environment. Ability to work weekends and/or evenings on a constant basis; Occasional travel is required. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body.

Other:
Ability to plan, organize and execute “giving” campaigns directed at alumni, community and capital projects. Ability to handle several projects simultaneously and have the ability to prioritize the projects based on deadlines and importance to fulfilling the department’s fundraising requirements as they pertain to the annual budget. Ability to communicate effectively with external and internal contacts. Understand and adhere to all policies and procedures of the University, Conference and the NCAA. Ability to exhibit integrity with high ethical standards and strict adherence to NCAA, conference, university and departmental rules and regulations as well as solid commitment to academic integrity, student-athlete welfare, ethnic diversity and gender equity. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
