Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in information technology or related field, from an accredited institution of higher education. Related information technology experience may be substituted year-for-year for the required education.
  • 1-2 years experience using a web content management system.
  • Fluency in HTML and CSS .
  • Have familiarity with Adobe Photoshop or another graphics editing platform.
  • Capable of both contributing to large projects as part of a team and working on individual projects with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to and willingness to work in a customer service role with website stakeholders.
License/Certification Required

None.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The web area of University Communications is tasked with building and managing strategic university websites; providing hosting, training and support for the university’s content management systems; and providing consulting in content development, design, usability and accessibility to official university departments and offices.

The IT Web Designer / Developer I will work as part of a high-performing, detail oriented and user-experience-focused team to build and maintain official university websites utilizing the university’s versions of the Drupal and WordPress content management systems and provide support for the stakeholders of university websites.

Work will include:
  • updating content, developing navigation and content procedures, designing layouts, troubleshooting issues and problems, conducting one-on-one consultations with stakeholders and performing periodic content, usability and accessibility reviews of university websites.
  • duties also include the migration of university websites from a deprecated content management system into supported university content management systems.
About the department: University Communications (UComm) is a unit that reports to the Vice Chancellor of External Affairs and Strategic Initiatives and Chief of Staff. The unit is responsible for Chancellor and Vice Chancellor communications and communication strategy, and managing the reputation of Appalachian State University. Its mission is to share the unique essence and energy of Appalachian and its people through strategic, creative and dynamic communications that promote the university and its many constituents. UComm creates promotional materials for recruitment and fundraising purposes, as well as for events, performances and information campaigns. The web area of UComm is responsible for using the university’s web presence to support these actions.

Suggested Salary Range
$55,000 - $60,000
