Wayne State University is searching for an experienced University Counselor III at its Detroit campus location.

Essential functions (job duties):

Serve as the Liaison with the Dean of Basic Science and the Dean of Clinical Education to
align Student Affairs policy and procedures with the reform curriculum initiatives.
Participate in the development of new curriculum to support career advising and student
well-being.

Assist in the development of & compliance with remediation plans for off-track students.

Participate in the Learning Communities Faculty Advisory Committee.
Serve as the Liaison to main campus Student Disability Services.
The University Counselor III position will be responsible for providing academic and
personal counseling services for approximately 300 medical students from matriculation
through graduation. This position reports to the Associate Dean of Student Affairs and
Career Development.
Responsible for the daily provision of academic and personal counseling services for a
minimum case assignment of 300 medical students from matriculation through graduation.
Work with students individually and in groups in various activities and programs focused on
emotional health, academic success, professional development and career advising on a
daily basis.
Assist in the development, innovation, implementation and evaluation of health and wellness
programming which meet the changing needs of medical students in a rapidly developing
curriculum.

Unique duties:

Represent the Office of Student Affairs and Career Development on various School of Medicine and University committees and functions. Participate in the regional and national activities of the AAMC.

Qualifications:

Master's degree required in counseling and guidance, student personnel, social work and/or psychology.
Doctorate Degree preferred.

Preferred qualifications:

Five to Eight years of experience in working with students. Medical student experience preferred. Ability to accommodate a high volume of students while individually addressing a wide variety of challenging academic and personal situations. Excellent problem-solving skills required. Commitment to learning the organizational and curricular structure of the comprehensive undergraduate medical education program. Provide direct support to the developing leadership initiatives in Student Affairs (career Advising, Health and Wellness, and Mentoring). Develop and Implement programming to address the Health and Wellness of the student body. Adaptable to rapid organizational and curricular change. Ability to handle conflict resolution and crisis, emotional and psychological needs of the young adult medical student. Knowledgeable about mental health, human services referral agencies in the tri-county area. Possess outstanding written and verbal communication skills. Responsive and available to the needs of others. Work cooperatively and collaboratively in a team approach. Must be flexible, creative and have the ability to remain objective. Dedicated to organizational excellence. General knowledge and understanding of student policies and procedures and administrative structure. Research skills/past track record of scholarly activity highly desirable.
