Position Summary:
The Junior Geologist position is a full-time, non-faculty exempt appointment stationed at the University of Idaho's Moscow campus. A Junior Geologist reports to the Director, coordinates work plans with Research Geologists and Senior Geologists, and assists and facilitates the completion of geological and geochemical field research projects at the Idaho Geological Survey (IGS). Position requires collection, analysis, and interpretation of geochemical, geophysical, and geological data and the construction, publication, and presentation of the research and conclusions to a diverse audience. The Junior Geologist assumes co-author or lead author position on geologic maps, technical reports, and other geology-related publications at the IGS. Position involves multiple, concurrent geological mapping and sampling projects, and the supervision of student support staff. The position requires extended field work and interaction with industry, state and federal agencies, academic institutions, professional colleagues, and the general public.

The Idaho Geological Survey (IGS) is a non-regulatory state agency that leads in the collection, interpretation, and dissemination of geologic and mineral data for Idaho. Formerly known as the Idaho Bureau of Mines and Geology, the agency has served the state since 1919. The Survey's mission is to provide the state with timely and relevant geologic information. Members of the IGS fulfill this mission through applied geologic research and strong collaborations with federal and state agencies, academia, and the private sector. IGS research focuses on geologic mapping, geologic hazards, hydrogeology, geothermal energy, oil and gas, and metallic and industrial minerals. The Survey's Digital Mapping Laboratory produces new digital geologic maps, datasets, and publications which are available to the public on the IGS website. The IGS is also engaged in the archiving and dissemination of historic mining records, community service, and earth science education.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Master’s Degree in Geology.
Experience with:
  • Three months of geologic work experience.
  • Developing and constructing geologic maps and cross sections.
  • Using geochemical and geophysical research methods, including data collection and analysis techniques to analyze and synthesize data for reports.
  • Managing and/or curating datasets, preferably geochemical data.
  • Orienteering, data collecting, geologic mapping, and safety in the field setting.
  • Using computer software and applications for vector graphics.
  • Using word processing and spreadsheet software.
  • Using computer software and applications for GIS.
  • Conducting independent research.
  • Working as part of an interdisciplinary team.
  • Writing research reports and articles.


Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with:
  • Possessing more than three months of relevant professional work experience.
  • Ability to conduct field work alone involving extensive traveling for field assignments and camping in inclement weather.
  • Familiarity with the geology of Idaho.
  • Sedimentary or metasedimentary rocks.
  • Critical minerals research.
  • One or more of the following: 1) mineral exploration or mining; 2) geochemical or geophysical applications to geology; 3) geologic mapping; 4) geospatial databases and 5) state geological survey.

  • Ability to hike over rough terrain and carry equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
