Position Title:                  Director, Titan Student Union

Reports To:                      Associate Executive Director

Payroll Classification:    Salaried, Exempt

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The Titan Student Union Director strives to develop an organizational environment in which part-time and full-time employees and volunteers can fully develop their potential in carrying out the mission of the of the Associated Students Inc., CSUF (ASI) and the Titan Student Union (TSU). The TSU Director is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations, personnel, and budget management of the TSU and all its’ entities (ASC, SLL, Dean of Students), UCC, and ASI Food Pantry. The TSU Director develops and recommends policy to the Associate Executive Director and the Associated Students Board of Directors. The TSU Director regularly confers with student leaders, faculty, and administrators on operational and administrative issues and, where appropriate, develops and implements workable solutions and responses to expressed concerns.

 

Programs and Facilities

  • Leads the planning, organization, coordinator, implementation, and evaluation of programs by:
    • Analyzing and establishing proper staffing levels to meet program expectations.
    • Hiring, training, supervising, and evaluating a highly qualified and professional staff
    • Developing and maintaining positive working relationships with and between Titan Student Union staff, ASI staff, and University/Department staff.
    • Assessing and responding to the campus community’s needs and wants in TSU programs and services.
  • Provides leadership and direction for the following programs run by their respective coordinator:
    • TSU Operations
    • University Conference Center
    • Information Services
    • Titan Bowl & Billiards
    • ASI Food Pantry
    • Art Galleries
    • Drop-in Art Program

 Administration

  • Works closely with the Associate Executive Director in the establishment of goals and objectives for each program/service area. Monitors and evaluates performance of each department and is responsible for ensuring that program/service performance is maintained at optimum levels.
  • Hires, onboards, and supervises the following staff positions:
    • Direct supervision
      • Associate Director, TSU Operations
      • Assistant Director, Information Services and Food Pantry
    • In-direct supervision
      • Event Planner I
      • Event Planner II
      • Building Services Coordinator
      • Food Pantry Coordinator
      • Operations Supervisor(s)
  • Monitors the administration of all contract service lease agreements for the TSU. Solicits and evaluates proposals, negotiates contracts, and recommends appropriate services to the Associate Executive Director.
  • Monitors and evaluates these contracts for compliance and effective service to the University community.
  • Works closely with the Associate Executive Director and to develop and implement effective short and long-range planning strategies as well as appropriate assessment and evaluative methods to ensure that the TSU’s provide contemporary and relevant programs and services to the University community.
  • Confers with the Associate Executive Director regarding Local, State and Federal legislation, and System policies and regulations that affect the organization. Attends various professional development programs and workshops.

 Promotions and Marketing

  • Works closely with ASI Marketing, Communication and Design to ensure the development and implementation of an on-going and comprehensive promotional and marketing effort that effectively presents TSU and ASI programs and services to the University community.

Budget and Finance

  • In coordination with the Associate Executive Director and the Chief Financial Officer, the TSU Director is responsible for the development of departmental annual and adjusted operating budgets, as well as the annual capital outlay budget.
  • Responsible for the proper management of all operating budgets under their direction to include cash handling, compliance with organizational budgetary policies and procedures, and ensuring that all expenditures are consistent with intent of the budget.
  • Monitors the various income and expense centers of the TSU and takes appropriate action to meet established budget goals and policies.
  • Responsible for developing and recommending appropriate mid-year budget revisions, developing, and recommending an annual operating budget, and developing and recommending annual capital expenditure requests.

Customer Service and Collaboration

  • Responsible for developing and maintaining a quality, customer-service program designed to meet the conference, meeting, and hospitality needs of the University and surrounding communities.
  • Works closely with the Auxiliary Services Corporation staff and other personnel in the coordination of TSU Food Court, conference, and banquet services.
  • Where appropriate, collaborates with the Children’s Center Director, Director of Student Recreation Center, Student Government Director, Student Life and Leadership staff and Dean of Students staff to ensure effective coordination and use of resources and facilities that supports all ASI/TSU programs and services.
  • Meets with and appropriately respond to individual students, faculty, and staff regarding questions, concerns, suggestions, and complaints about TSU programs and services.

Operations and Safety

  • Works closely with the Director of Building Engineering and Facilities to develop and implement an effective, comprehensive preventive maintenance program for all mechanical, electrical, and pneumatic equipment belonging to the ASI and TSU.
  • Contributes to the development, implementation, and evaluation of the contract custodial service that is under the immediate supervision of the Director of Building Engineering and Facilities. Updates custodial specifications as required. Participates in the annual bidding processes to include development of a Request for Proposal document, solicitation, and evaluation of bids. Makes recommendation to Associate Executive Director.
  • Works closely with the Director of Building Engineering and Facilities to ensure effective grounds maintenance and enhancement programs for the Titan Student Union hard and soft scape.
  • Works closely with the Associate Executive Director in the development of minor and major construction and remodeling proposals and shall work with committees of the ASI Boards and appropriate University offices and off-campus consultants in the development and implementation of projects of this nature. Coordinates all budget and funding details with Chief Financial Officer.
  • Establishes standards and implements employee training in the proper handling and use of all Conference Center equipment and furnishings. Coordinates inventory of equipment and establish schedules for repair and replacement.
  • Responsible for effective Safety/Risk Management plans for the emergency care of staff and customers of the Titan Student Union and hosted programs.
  • Ensures all operations and programs are conducted with safety of staff and participants as first priority, and in accordance with the ASI Injury and Illness Prevention Plan by:
  • Serving as a member of the ASI Safety Committee and participating in the development and implementation of a comprehensive organizational safety program
  • Conducting comprehensive on-site safety inspections of all facilities and programs on a regular basis. Ensure all areas are clean, in good repair, and in compliance with respective safety codes.
  • Providing employees with regular, appropriate, and pertinent safety training
  • Developing and maintaining safety audit programs for each facility/program
  • Requiring all staff to meet minimum qualifications and certifications within the job description.
  • Providing First Aid/CPR/AED training
  • Ensuring appropriate safety, liability, and warning signage is appropriately posted.
  • Coordinates annual building inventory for all ASI and TSU furnishings and equipment.
  • Ensures the completion of a comprehensive list of all accidents and emergencies that are likely to occur in the Recreation facilities; establishes emergency action plans for actual occurrence of each respective event.
  • Reports accidents to Associate Executive Director and reviews changes required to avoid reoccurrence.
  • Reports maintenance problems and/or broken and unsafe equipment to the appropriate party immediately

Education and/or Work Experience Requirements:

Education:

Bachelor’s degree required from an accredited college or university. Master’s degree preferred. Specific and significant related work experience may be substituted for the required education on a year for year basis.

 

Experience:

Must have a minimum of five to seven years progressively responsible administrative/management experience in a large Student Union operation or closely related facility. Experience shall include building operations as well as programming responsibilities. Experience in student affairs or other closely related fields will be considered.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of theories, principles, and techniques of facilities management, fiscal and personnel management, and educational programming of a diverse college union operation.

  • Knowledge of California State University regulations and procedures is desirable.

Special Requirements:

  • Maybe subject to DMV Pull program.
  • Upon hire employment history, criminal, and employment background check will be completed.
  • First Aid and CPR Certification within six (6) months of employment.
  • Required to be a Limited Mandatory Reporter and sign Limited ASI Mandatory Reporter Form.
