This is a newly created role and an exciting opportunity to lead Translational Research at UChicago’s Comprehensive Cancer Center in a highly visible role that builds bridges across the cancer center and the university. With an impressive variety of resources available to support the growth of translational research activities, this leader will be responsible for building, strengthening, and fostering translational team science activities, and will play an important role in overall strategic planning for the Cancer Center.  

 

The Opportunity

The Associate Director of Translational Research will work with basic, translational and clinical investigator teams to translate scientific discoveries from the laboratory to the clinic and community, with a focus on the broad thematic priority areas of the UCCCC – novel therapeutics, tumor immunology, immuno-engineering, cellular therapy, cancer metabolism, epigenetics, epitranscriptomics, target discovery, prevention, survivorship, and population science. Resources are available to accommodate an existing lab. The AD will oversee and grow Translational Groups of Research Excellence (TGRE) and other translational groups.

 

The Ideal Candidate

This AD will have a penchant for creative thinking and programmatic growth, with an open leadership style and will have previous experience guiding teams in a complex, multi-disciplinary academic environment. This executive leader will have experience in translational cancer research, a track record of scholarly activity and NCI or cancer-relevant funding. Experience leading a lab and as a key participant in collaborative grants, is valued. MD or PhD or equivalent degree required.  

 

The Organization

University of Chicago Medicine Comprehensive Cancer Center is a growing academic unit that received NCI designation in 1974, Comprehensive Cancer Center designation in 2008, and in April 2023 was named the newest member institution of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN). Recently, approval was awarded to move forward with building the state’s and city’s first freestanding Comprehensive Cancer Center, a $815M, 525,000SF facility with 128 beds. The Comprehensive Cancer Center is part of the Biological Sciences Division, which delivers undergraduate, graduate, medical, and postgraduate biological sciences education together with outstanding patient care and world-renowned research. UChicago Medicine has grown into an integrated academic and community health system, comprised of the Pritzker School of Medicine, the Biological Sciences Division and Ingalls Memorial, a community-based hospital and outpatient facility in Harvey, and the University of Chicago Medical Center, which is consistently ranked among the best hospitals in the nation by U.S. News & World Report. The University is a member of the Argonne National Laboratory Collaborative and has a Cyclotron facility with cGMP capabilities -- and more.

 

The Region

Chicago, Illinois stretches along the southwest shore of Lake Michigan, featuring 26 miles of lakefront with 25 beaches. The city offers more than 8,800 acres of green space, 600 parks, 200 miles of bike lanes and 19 miles of lakefront bicycle paths. The city has major transportation hubs and an underground pedestrian system that links more than 40 blocks in the Central Business District. The city showcases art in more than 60 museums and 200 art galleries and offers a variety of major sports teams and other recreational options.
