Job Summary

The College of Veterinary Medicine seeks candidates for a Canine Instructor position to perform or assist with canine development, training, and handling operations to support research and development activities in the Canine Performance Sciences Program. This position also provides general care and welfare of canines, maintains equipment and facilities, participates in outreach activities, and other duties as assigned to support the program’s mission.

We are seeking two Canine Instructors with certain positions focused on young dog development and related research and others focused on operational research and development. Applicants will be assessed based on experience and skills to fill these particular roles.

These are limited-term positions, and continuation is contingent on funding availability.

Essential Functions

Level I:
  • Assists with basic canine development, training, and handling to support detection dog production and research, development, and outreach activities.
  • Assists others in observing, recording, and assisting in evaluating canine behavior and performance for production, research, and development activities.
  • Assists in the overall management of facilities and equipment utilized by the program.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Level II:
  • Performs canine development, training and handling to support detection dog production and research, development, and outreach activities.
  • Observes, records, and assists in evaluating canine behavior and performance for production, research, and development activities.
  • Assists in planning, design and supervision of training, research, development and outreach activities.
  • Maintains equipment and facilities.
  • Identifies and assists in enhancing canine performance.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Level III :
  • Performs canine development, training and handling to support detection dog production and research, development, and outreach activities.
  • Plans canine training scenarios. Plans, designs, and supervises canine training, research, development, and outreach activities for efficient and effective operations. Presents and discusses project plans and progress with customers. Plans and designs training protocols and participates in planning and design of research protocols.
  • Observes, records, and assists in evaluating canine behavior and performance for production, research, and development activities. Evaluates canines and canine handler teams.
  • Identifies and corrects deficiencies in canine development and training.
  • Maintains equipment and facilities.
  • Leads, guides, and instructs trainees, students, or volunteers and perform other duties as necessary to support the operations of the Canine Performance Sciences Program.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience:
Level I - High school diploma or equivalent

Level II – High school diploma or equivalent plus 2 years of experience in developing, handling, and training detection canines in a professional environment. Must have 1 year of training, mentoring, or supervising employees in performing detection canine training or operations.

Level III – High school diploma or equivalent plus 4 years of experience in developing, handling, and training detection canines in a professional environment. Must have 1 year of training, mentoring, or supervising employees in performing detection canine training or operations.

Minimum Skills, License, and Certifications

Minimum Skills and Abilities

Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Behavioral, Animal, Zoology, and Biological Sciences, or a related degree is desired.

Basic animal training and husbandry/care skills and ability to follow protocols, record observations, and communicate effectively

The job may require frequent travel and possible extensive travel periods. Must have the ability to lift & carry up to 100 pounds and be willing to, at times, work weekends and atypical hours and work outdoors in all types of weather conditions.

Must be authorized to work in the United States at time of employment.

Minimum Technology Skills

Basic computer communications (i.e., e-mail) and data entry skills. Ability to tow a trailer.

Valid Driver’s License

Desired Qualifications

Experience working with, training, and caring for animals from birth to adulthood; educational (formal or informal) and practical background providing an understanding of basic principles of learning/conditioning and ability to both verbally describe and apply principles; Experience in public and/or customer service; comfortable making public presentations and leading collaborative activities; working effectively in collaborative teams as well as independently; ability to solve problems; good interpersonal communication skills; goal oriented, motivated to achieve success for themselves and, equally their co-workers and program; ability and experience in driving larger vehicles and towing trailers, especially animal transport vehicles and towing animal transport trailers. Operational detection canine experience. Leadership and instruction of groups/teams especially in military or other government service. Research. Relevant military, government agency, vocational, college coursework (behavior, psychology, animal science, biology etc.), bachelors or advanced degree.
