Position Summary

Managerially responsible for training, development, evaluation and supervision of the music library. Responsible for the music library’s personnel, programmatic planning, policies and procedures, scheduling, maintenance of departmental statistics and records, provision of services, written reports as requested, and management of available resources. Provides leadership for the development of respective departmental policies and procedures. Has responsibility for the Music Library’s circulation, reference, library instruction, and collection development. Functions as the liaison between the University Libraries and the School of Music and maintains effective communication with colleagues, faculty, and students. Assumes special projects as assigned. Fulfills requirements of faculty status in areas of contributions to librarianship, scholarly activities, and service.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Reporting to the Associate Dean for Public Services, the Music Librarian will:
  • Contribute to the development of distinctive, interdisciplinary, multi-format, and intersectional collections that serve the wide-ranging needs of students, artists, scholars, and researchers
  • Provide advanced reference and research consultations, maintain online research guides, offer library instruction, and may also have opportunities for involvement in outreach, instruction, and exhibits relating to archival and special collections and for participation in digital initiatives
  • Collaborate with other subject liaisons as appropriate to support students and faculty in interdisciplinary research and teaching
  • Contribute to overall reference, instruction and collection development for the Libraries
  • Catalog music scores and recordings
  • Engage in community focused programs and initiatives
  • Provide some evening and weekend service as needed
  • Develop a research agenda resulting in scholarly publications and presentations, consistent with professional responsibilities and the Libraries’ mission and goals
  • Participate in professional service work at the campus, state, regional, and national levels, including engaging with relevant disciplinary organizations
Minimum Required Qualifications
  • Master’s degree from an ALA -accredited school of library information science
  • An additional advanced degree in a music-related field (Master’s or higher)
  • Experience cataloging music materials, especially sheet music and recordings
  • Supervisory experience
  • Strong commitment to providing outstanding customer service and research support
  • Effective oral and written communications skills
  • Knowledge of trends and topics in current performing arts research and of resources for performing arts scholarship
  • Demonstrated understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion issues and scholarship in relation to music and the performing arts
Additional Requirements

Preferred Qualifications
  • Evidence of professional and/or scholarly activity
  • Experience with creation of web content
  • Experience with teaching in a library or academic setting
  • Experience with binding and preserving music materials
  • Working knowledge of one or more European languages
