The Opportunity:
The Director of Facilities Management leads efforts to develop and manage physical assets to ensure a sustainable, safe, inclusive and welcoming physical environment in support of the mission of Unity Environmental University. This position works with senior leadership to establish strategic direction and leads execution of facilities planning, development, safety and maintenance efforts.

The Director of Facilities Management will be responsible for facilities planning and maintenance, campus beautification and landscaping, real estate management, campus cleanliness, energy and utilities, physical asset maintenance, construction and renovation, and emergency preparedness within a framework of safety and inclusion.

In addition, this position is responsible for the safety of all Unity Environmental University students, employees, and property. This includes the day to day operations of the department while ensuring that all policies, procedures, controls and reporting regulations are complied with at all times. This position also administers tasks, programs, reporting, and other initiatives related to environmental sustainability of the facilities.

The successful Director of Facilities Management will provide the university with grounded creativity through proven strategy, data based decision-making, and innovative thinking. Within the framework of functional leadership, the DFM supports and is supported by other senior leaders and works with all constituencies to realize the Unity Environmental University Mission and Strategic Plan.

Day to day responsibilities :
  • Leads campus physical infrastructure efforts at Unity Environmental University and ensures achievement of institutionally established goals.
  • Works with the President of the UC Enterprise to steward the Unity Environmental University Mission and establish enterprise-wide vision and strategic direction.
  • Establishes appropriate measures of success for the units comprised within Facilities Management
  • Provides centralized planning and policies for centralized units.
  • Manages internal/external controls over decentralized units.
  • Provides centralized operational services where appropriate.
  • Provides support to senior leadership in efforts to integrate curricular, co-curricular, and residential components into a transformative and developmentally differentiated living and learning experience through the educational framework of sustainability science.
  • Manages the design, bid, submission, and construction phases of major and minor projects on properties.
  • Plans, monitors, and evaluates activities of the public safety department to ensure the safety of all institutional assets, employees, students, and guests.
  • Ensure university-wide compliance with Sustainability policies.
  • Assists in developing the annual operating budget and makes recommendations for budget increases and reductions. Monitors and ensures compliance of the budget.
  • Manages relationships with third party service providers relating to facility services, including but not limited paper shredding, snow removal, landscaping, and property management.
  • Directly supervise employees in the facilities and public safety units, including work-study students. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organizations policies and applicable laws. This will involve occasionally working on all shifts in order to assess and coach employees.
  • Ensures campus fire alarm and life safety systems are monitored to include inspections and documentation.
  • Responsible for the campus/Enterprise two-way radio system and FCC licensing compliance.
  • Responsible for Clery Act compliance and all governmental reporting related to campus security and fire protection.
  • Ensures completion of stars program reporting through the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE)
  • Coordinates with local law enforcement as necessary. Maintains good working relationships with local law enforcement.
  • Responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the Unity Environmental University armory.
  • Coordinates with local and regional emergency management agencies as necessary. Maintains good working relationships with local and regional emergency management agencies.
  • Manages shuttle and bike programs as needed to meet the outcomes as determined by the President of the UC Enterprise
  • Serves on the Emergency Response team and is responsible for coordinating and planning emergency drills in conjunction with the Emergency Response team. Emergency response scenarios include but are not limited to active shooter, impact of terrorism on school safety, threat assessment, lockdowns, and evacuations.
  • Identifies, investigates, and resolves security breaches.
  • Ensures response to all campus emergencies including bomb threats, fire alarms, intrusion alarms, etc.
  • Models and ensures appropriate workplace behavior and appearance of the unit that reflects the values of Unity Environmental University.
  • Reviews employee related issues and makes recommendations to supervisor on actions to be taken; ensures unit and employee policies and procedures are appropriately carried out; participates in recruitment and selection of new employees.
  • Develops and executes an integrated physical facilities plan that advances the institution’s strategic plan and mission, supports attainment of revenue goals, fosters student satisfaction, differentiates Unity Environmental University, and increases its national exposure.
  • Leads all university physical facilities, landscaping, and ground planning and development initiatives.
  • Serves as a representative of Unity Environmental University in community planning meetings.
  • Acts as campus representative at design and construction meetings and ensures that the best interests of the university are monitored.
  • Manages strategic plan initiatives and goals as assigned.
  • Provides supervision and managerial oversight for physical facilities and other areas as assigned.
  • Advocates for institutional resources to create and maintain high quality of departments and programs and manages the budget for areas of oversight.
  • Continually assesses and strengthens all phases of each functional area to improve processes and efficiencies.
  • Develops and recommends new and revised policies, procedures, and methods related to campus operations.
  • Continuously assesses the overall effectiveness of the unit and facilitates training as necessary.
  • Work closely with Student Success staff to ensure the safety of our students at all times.
  • Develop student educational opportunities around campus safety and student safety.
  • Though this position reports to the President of the UC Enterprise, it must be responsive to the President’s requests even if they do not come from the supervisor.
  • Participates on task groups as assigned.
  • Pro-actively communicate challenges, successes, and failures with leadership.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Do you have the skills?
  • Bachelor’s Degree in a related field required.
  • Minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible experience in one or more of the key areas of facilities and maintenance; must have experience in managing multiple departments.
  • Must have demonstrated experience and comprehensive knowledge of: facilities management, utility plants, power generation & distribution systems, project management, building maintenance and construction, facilities planning, design and construction, energy management and conservation, sustainability programs and practices, personnel management, professional development and training, industrial safety programs and financial management.
  • Successful experience preparing and executing physical facilities plans; setting and meeting strategic targets within a strategic plan; and using data to inform strategy.
  • Record of leadership and service that demonstrates integrity and accountability and collaborative yet decisive administrative style that encourages informed risk and creative thinking.
  • Personal commitment to the environmental focus and mission of the unviersity.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong collaborative, interpersonal, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Aptitude for consensus-building.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with members of higher education, the governing board, legislators and community/business leaders, parents and students, faculty and all other members of the university.

  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
  • Familiarity with word processing, spreadsheets, and computerized data base systems.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
  • Must have a valid drivers’ license with a good driving record.
  • Ability to function effectively within a matrix organizational structure, maintaining open lines of communication while being discreet, courteous and well poised.

Work Schedule:
Work hours are specific to the requirements of this position and can include days, evenings, weekends. Working extended hours may be required as needed and Unity Environmental University employees must be flexible and cooperative in fulfilling their responsibilities while meeting the Universities needs.

Although a t Unity Environmental University Enterprise employees are generally scheduled to work at their base location, there are times when travel is necessary and employees are required from time to time to attend events, meetings or work temporary assignment at any Unity Environmental University location.

Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this job, it is regularly required to sit and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand or walk. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 lbs. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The use of either hand for repetitive movements such as grasping, grasping, and turning, and fine manipulation is required as is the ability to use the telephone for internal and external communications.
