CONTEXT OF THE JOB:

The Information Technologies Research Cyberinfrastructure (IT-RCI) department at the University of Delaware provides the infrastructure, applications and services required to support the University’s diverse and growing research portfolio. Research support is a key strategic and operational activity of the central IT organization and is integral to the strategic goals of the University.

The Scientific Applications Consultant will work with a diverse range of faculty, staff, and students primarily but not exclusively in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines and associated data scientists. The incumbent will help them to make the best possible use of UD's High-Performance Computing (HPC) resources, research computing systems and cloud services. The incumbent will work with researchers, educators and other team members to identify and resolve technical obstacles to the work of UD's computing-intensive and data-intensive research and education community.

The ideal candidate for this position is curious, creative, tenacious, self-directed, and demonstrates a strong work ethic; is productive working independently as well as collaboratively; is analytical and able to identify, define, interpret, and resolve both technical and human issues. The candidates should also demonstrate the excellent communications skills needed to be a research computing facilitator.

The Scientific Applications Consultant reports to the Director of Research Cyberinfrastructure.

The Scientific Applications Consultant is part of a career ladder. Candidates will be hired into levels that are commensurate with their experience and educational background.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Participates as a member of a highly technical and customer-service driven team, forging close working relationships with scientific research groups across campus.
• Provides end user support services to faculty, staff, and students on the use of research computing hardware and software as well as scientific applications and scientific workflows.
• Conducts investigations and tests of complex scientific software systems to enhance performance or to investigate and resolve matters of significance.
• Helps to identify and understand research and education activities that can benefit from research cyberinfrastructure, not only at UD but also at other institutions such as national supercomputing centers; engage users to help develop and optimize workflows that effectively and efficiently use these resources.
• Educates and trains users regarding both longstanding and new systems and services based on existing and emerging researcher needs and user experiences, working proactively to identify and develop the research cyberinfrastructure user community and to broaden engagement across UD.
• Provides workshops and one-on-one technical assistance and training to faculty, staff and students in the use of a shared high performance computing environment and associated scientific software.
• Investigates and evaluates new technologies and techniques of importance to researchers.
• Maintains technical knowledge and keeps abreast of technical developments in area of expertise.
• Maintains broad knowledge of state-of-the-art technology, equipment, systems, and applicable laws and standards. Makes recommendations for use of specific applications on campus when appropriate.
• Establishes and maintains appropriate working relationships with colleagues and clients and follows University and department policies and procedures governing IT efforts.
• Acts as a technical resource for departmental IT professionals in UD units across campus.
• Works within the department’s overall strategic plan following project priorities and scope.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Bachelor’s degree with three years related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience. Degree in the field of Computer Science, Engineering, Applied Mathematics, or Information Systems preferred.
• Experience with the Linux operating system and utilizing the command line interface.
• Demonstrated ability and experience with scripting and programming (e.g., Bash, Python, Perl, C, R, Julia, or Java).
• Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a collaborative and diverse environment is required.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to accommodate various needs and work effectively with a diverse user base.
• Effective communication skills (oral, written, listening, presentation), organization, interpersonal, and customer-service skills.
• Ability to manage multiple projects and be detail oriented.
• Aptitude for learning quickly and functioning in a dynamic technological environment.
• Demonstrated understanding and consideration of the differing needs and concerns of individuals with varying identities, cultures, and backgrounds.

PREFERRED QUALIFCATIONS:

• Experience and proficiency with High Performance Computing or similar areas of study.
• Experience with job schedulers, e.g., SLURM, PBS, SGE, etc.
• Experience developing and deploying cloud-based services and resources.
• Experience working at an academic institution.
• Experience with parallel codes and libraries (e.g., MPI, OpenMP, Cuda).
• Experience with research and/or practice in one or more STEM disciplines.
