CONTEXT OF THE JOB:

IT Academic Technology Services (IT-ATS) helps the University of Delaware educators implement innovative ideas in digital education through consultation, training, co-production support and seed funding for new ideas in residential and online education. We partner with UD leadership, faculty, staff, and graduate student instructors to explore new technologies and pedagogies, cultivate innovative pilot projects, and aid in the development of new online and hybrid programs.

Our functional areas include instructional design, learning management systems support, digital media support, and instructional television and conferencing support. We assist with in-class instruction, online learning, hybrid courses, and online curricula. We also provide specialized assistance, such as classroom recording, video conferencing facilities and software, student response systems, instructional project development, webcasting and video hosting, in-class technical instruction, learning management systems, learning space design, and numerous faculty development programs.

IT-ATS collaborates with other instructional support units on campus to form a Teaching Support Network through the Office of the Provost. In IT-ATS, we operate an innovative campus-based teaching and technology site in which we provide technology consultations, host events and training, and foster interdisciplinary connections. We have adaptable-use areas for faculty, teaching staff, and graduate teaching assistants.

The Digital Media Support group within IT-ATS, is responsible for the capture, production, storage and transmission of university courses and other original programming using audio/video servers, digital storage and streaming computer systems. They also provide video production, reproduction in various media, digital encoding of video, audio and stills.

The Digital Media Specialist evaluates, implements, and promotes digital media equipment, software, and services that meet teaching and learning needs. The successful candidate is responsible for designing, implementing and maintaining interactive websites and associated databases using a variety of programming languages. In addition, the successful candidate supports and maintains the integration of digital video servers and other computing resources for the university community in specific applications that leverage computing technologies. The DMS works with clients and other IT staff to evaluate their needs and implements appropriate solutions for projects utilizing networked distribution and other computing and programmed resources. Solutions are developed using established computing technologies or by developing innovative and highly integrated unique software solutions.

The Digital Media Specialist reports directly to the Director, ATS but will receive direction on day-to-day tasks from the Sr. Digital Media Specialist.


MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assists the Sr. Digital Media Programmer with evaluating, implementing and promoting digital media equipment, software and services to meet teaching and learning needs.
  • Researches, designs and installs applications and software for audio/video servers and audio/video streaming computers and devices. Provides systems analysis of audio/video technology and implements modifications to software and hardware for these systems that integrate with other applications and products. Troubleshoots problems and implements solutions.
  • Schedules lecture capture courses and events. Tests, corrects and reports problems for quality control. Edits recordings as needed. Maintains lecture capture database and hardware. Designs and creates 3D objects for use with lecture capture hardware and other projects. Supports faculty using lecture capture.
  • Participates in technology projects such as grant initiatives and annual events such as the IT Tech Fair, and Winter and Summer Faculty Institutes.
  • Assists with the design and implementation; maintains interactive websites and associated databases using a variety of programming languages. Creates content for and maintains the IT-ATS web site. Uploads and maintains streaming media to the streaming server.
  • Works closely with campus clients in researching and recommending digital technology solutions for both departmental and university projects involving online delivery of instructional programs. Consults with faculty and staff regarding best practices and choice in using media.
  • Integrates traditional analog media into digital forms suitable for publishing in an on-line or digitally stored fashion. Edits, creates, and/or converts digital media.
  • Maintains the university Podcasts page. Works with clients, uploads new media, manages the database, researches and programs new updates to Podcasts page. Participates in the delivery of university events as live webcasts.
  • Researches, designs, develops, tests and implements strategies for implementing new software and web applications supporting acquisition and delivery of on-line learning materials.
  • Researches and maintains resources in all areas of emerging computing technology for the creation and transport of digital media. Identifies, evaluates and recommends emerging digital media technologies and methodologies. Attends internal and external training.
  • Establishes and maintains appropriate working relationships with colleagues and clients and follows University and department policies and procedures governing IT efforts especially with respect to security and responsible use. Works within the department’s overall strategic plan following project priorities and scope. Meets deadlines and achieves goals.
  • Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in a digital media related discipline and three years’ experience integrating digital video, networking and computing resources in a complex information technology environment or an equivalent combination of education and experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience in a University computing service environment is highly desirable. Knowledge of the principles, procedures and standards of integrated Web site structure/design and current authoring languages including multimedia, editing/authoring tools, and related Web site technologies.
  • Familiarity with HTML, Java and other Web-based programming languages.
  • Working knowledge of C/C++, Perl, PHP, Unix, Mac OS X and Windows experience required.
  • Visual Basic, Net and database (Access, SQL, Oracle) experience desirable.
  • Knowledge of Photoshop, Final Cut Pro, DVD Studio, multitrack audio recording and editing software such as Audition or Soundtrack Pro in addition to familiarity with client level applications like iMovie, GarageBand, MovieMaker and Photostory.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of networking paradigms, TCP/IP and Ethernet required.
  • Windows and Unix systems administration required.
  • Excellent problem solving, analytical, and troubleshooting skills required.
  • Requires effective interpersonal, customer service and communication skills (verbally and in writing) including the ability to communicate technical information to non-technical users and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community and rapidly changing technical environment.
  • Requires the ability to make administrative/procedural decisions and judgments, to analyze and resolve problems and to prioritize, plan and organize work.
  • Ability to consult and provide guidance to faculty, students and staff on media projects.
  • Ability to work closely with various members of the college community in concept and project development to meet their needs.
  • Demonstrated understanding and consideration of the differing needs and concerns of individuals with varying identities, cultures, and backgrounds.

Special Requirements:

  • Ability to lift and move, with or without assistance, computing related equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
