Job Description:


This position is responsible for day-to-day administration and support of network related infrastructure at Framingham State University. This includes WAN/Internet Connectivity, Firewalls, Network Security, Switched Networking, Wireless networking, Network Access Control (NAC) and Virtual Private Networking (VPN). The role handles hardware installation, systems troubleshooting, network monitoring, security implementation and routine infrastructure maintenance. It also works with individuals and departments at the University to provide analysis and support of their data networking needs. This position is a key contributor and collaborates with others within and outside of the division of Information Technology Services.

Manager of Network Services


  • Responsible for maintaining Internet connectivity and WAN devices including: Extreme Controllers, Fortinet firewalls and external routers.
  • Handles installation, configuration and routine maintenance of LAN related devices, including: routers, switches, hubs and wireless access points.
  • Manages Network Access Control (NAC), guest access, device registration and Eduroam.
  • Oversees Virtual Private Networking (VPN) and remote access technologies in use at the University.
  • Responsible for identifying, troubleshooting and resolving network related issues and failures.
  • Maintains network monitoring and management software and associated utilities.
  • Provides systems, software and firmware patches and upgrades.
  • Provides user account administration and access levels to networking systems in accordance with University guidelines and industry best practice standards.
  • Analyzes and implements network security measures and procedures in compliance with University policies and applicable laws and regulations.
  • Participates in development and documentation of overall policies and procedures related to the University network and related systems.
  • Inventories and documents systems and software within functional area of responsibility.
  • Coordinates and interacts with outside vendors and service providers, as required.
  • Supports remote network locations including the Warren Conference Center and the University's disaster recover site.
  • Provides backup to Security System Solutions Specialist, as necessary.
  • Contributes to Information Technology Services Management (ITSM) at the University by responding to reported incidents, fulfilling requests, and contributing to the knowledgebase.
  • Serves as Process Manager or Service Owner for designated items listed within the IT service catalog.
  • Accountable for ensuring that affirmative action, equal opportunity, and diversity are integrally tied to all actions and decisions in areas of responsibility.
  • Assumes additional responsibilities as may be determined by the Manager of Network Services or Director of Infrastructure and Operations.


All of the work associated with the duties and responsibilities for this position is ordinarily performed at Framingham State's main campus, and may be done periodically from a remote location consistent with the conditional provisions specified within University's Telework Guidelines and in accordance with an approved Telework Agreement.



  • A minimum of 4 years of experience in an IT/Network environment
  • In-depth network architecture knowledge of both WAN and LAN technologies.
  • In-depth understanding of firewalls and network security measures.
  • In-depth understanding of TCP/IP and network protocols.
  • Experience in router and switch installation, configuration, and operation.
  • Experience in wireless networking installation, configuration, and operation.
  • Experience with both Network Access Control (NAC) and Virtual Private Network (VPN) Technologies.
  • Understanding of voice, data and fiberoptic cabling infrastructure.
  • Availability to perform work during off-hours, including emergency call-ins and night/weekend.


  • Bachelor's degree (or equivalent experience) in computer related field.
  • In-depth understanding of Extreme communication switches, routers, wireless access points and management software.
  • Experience with Fortinet firewall devices and software.
  • Networking certifications are highly desired.
  • Higher Education experience is preferred.

Additional Information:

This is a full-time, non-exempt, benefits-eligible position in the Association of Professional Administrators (APA) bargaining unit with a title of Staff Assistant. The salary range is $67,000-74,000.
