Job Details

Woodbury University invites applications for one or more Adjunct Faculty to teach in the Game Art & Design program in the School of Media : Culture : Design. Courses will be taught in person on the Burbank campus.

Responsibilities

  • Syllabus and class preparation
  • Instruction during scheduled course times
  • Availability to students for office hours outside of class
  • Evaluation of student performance (e.g., grading papers, exams, presentations, projects)
  • Regular evaluation of students’ work, including prompt communication of performance on assignments
  • Submission of final grades to the Registrar’s Office, which is currently completed via Woodbury University Self- Service
  • Faculty meetings as needed by the chair or Dean

 

Design Courses

-- Sound Design Fundamentals
This course walks students through synthetic vs. real-world sound, psychoacoustics, the overtone series of periodic waveforms, harmonic analysis and timbre, composite sound effects, additive and subtractive synthesis, plus altering the acoustic behavior of traditional musical instruments. Students will arrange, process, and modify commercial sound effects, music loops, instrument samples, MIDI patterns, software instruments and device racks to realize an original sonic piece.
Course Requirements: Proficiency with Ableton Live 11, Audacity and elementary to intermediate music theory.
-- Experimental Technology for Games
This course is an exploration of the technologies to create advanced immersive experiences in the fields of virtual reality, mixed reality, augmented reality, and alternate reality games. We will explore the technologies that exist today for enhancing the user’s perceptual experience and the fundamentals of the human sensory experience that drives them.
Course Requirements: Proficiency with Unity 3D, Oculus Rift and Quest, Google Cardboard and haptic feedback, stereoscopy to real-time object tracking.
-- Introduction to Game Engines
This course is an exploration and analysis of visual development tools and reusable software components for game asset creation and management giving attention to 2D and 3D rendering performance, collision detection, simple scripting, animation, play mechanics, sound and music. Students will design and implement original game concepts and test for playability and design integrity.

Course Requirements: Proficiency with Unity3D and Maya.

We ask all faculty members to assess student work early and often, with a minimum of three written assessments for the semester. Your class may be designated as a Core Competency assessment course, in which case you will be required to submit course work and align your content with university rubrics. You may also need to meet periodically with your supervisor during the academic term regarding matters related to your employment.

Requirements

  • Minimum: A Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent in a related field of design or computer science. Master’s level or advanced degree preferred. 
  • Familiarity and technical knowledge of generation game systems both new and old.
  • Experience managing class rosters, attendance, timely grading of assignments.
  • Able to provide critical, informed, and creative feedback to students.
  • Published game title(s) a major plus.
  • Proficiency with Unity3D, Game Systems Programming in C# and Python
  • Able to instruct and guide students through best practices of prototyping, play testing, iteration, presentation and collaboration.

Compensation and Benefits

This appointment is for part-time employment and includes eligibility to participate in medical plans, 403(b) supplemental plan, and access to the tuition-remission benefit on a proportional basis. Eligibility is after 30 days of service on the first of the following month.

Academic Affairs evaluates and determines part-time adjunct pay based on teaching experience and degree. There are only four levels of compensation:

L1 Hourly Rate = $28.09  (less than 3 years of service, no terminal degree)

L2 Hourly Rate = $33.71  (less than 3 years of service with terminal degree)

L3 Hourly Rate = $32.31  (3 years of service and above, no terminal degree)

L4 Hourly Rate = $37.93  (3 years of services and above with terminal degree)
