Scope of Job:
To provide imaging services for patient care, prepare and administer radioactive drugs and or contrast media to patients. Provide technical skills and support to physicians or others who diagnose, care for, and treat patients and to researchers who investigate uses of radioactive drugs in the operation of nuclear medicine equipment for diagnostic and evaluation purposes.

Description of Duties:
· Prepares radioactive drugs and or contrast media for patient injection after order from a physician for a specific PET imaging study.· Performs organ imaging tests, including full skeletal, cardiac blood pool, and major vascular blood pool tests, and cysternograms utilizing gamma cameras, and/or stationary camera devices.· Performs complex procedures, including injecting radiopharmaceuticals under the direct supervision of a radiologist.· Prepares patient for imaging or nuclear medicine procedures by accurately assessing patient’s needs and providing patient education.· Injects radioactive drugs or contrast using sterile techniques as ordered by physician patient evaluation for allergies and medical tolerance.· Assists with pre-imaging/contrast lab requirement when needed.· May be required to obtain blood sample for pre-imaging/contrast lab requirement.· Prepares patients films for interpretation by neuroradiologist.· Follows specific guidelines for use of radioactive pharmaceuticals (drugs).· Follows specific state guided procedures for radiation disposal.· Explains test procedures and safety precautions to subjects and provides them with assistance during procedures.· Transfers, positions, and instructs patients in preparation for procedures.· Maintains and operates imaging equipment.· Identifies physical changes that can be reactions to drugs administered and ensures the environment is safe at all times for patient and staff.· Attains required approval and signature by nuclear medicine physicians.· Keeps detailed records of procedures and use of pharmaceutical agents.· Practices all safety measures including radiation safety and environment of care.· Completes all reports timely within set deadlines.· Performs other duties as assigned.

Supervision Received:
General supervision from assigned supervisor.

Supervision Given:
Direct supervision of assigned staff.

Required Education:
Associate degree in a related field. Graduate of an accredited program of study in Nuclear Medicine Technology and Computerized Tomography (CT) technology.

Preferred Education:
None.

Licenses/Certifications:
Current License in the State of Texas as Nuclear Medicine Technologist from the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMTCB) or Certified as Nuclear Medicine Technologist by American Registry of Radiologic Technologist (ARRT) and American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS)

Required Experience:
One (1) year of experience performing PET/CT imaging services.

Preferred Experience:
Bilingual in English and Spanish.

Equipment:
Standard nuclear medicine (PET/CT Scanner) and standard clinical/office equipment.

Working Conditions:
Needs to be able to successfully perform all required duties. Office/Clinic/Research Environment; some travel and weekend work is required. Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Exposure to all common diseases and/or blood borne pathogens. Work environment involves exposure to potentially dangerous or radioactive materials and situations that require following extensive safety precautions and may include the use of protective equipment. UTRGV is a distributed institution, which requires presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley.

Other:
Ability to communicate clearly and concisely with all levels of staff and physicians. Good written and verbal communication skills. Requires reasoning ability and good independent judgment.
