Scope of Job:
Responsible for providing direct and indirect clinical nutrition care, assessment services and support to effectively contribute to the patient's health and nutritional needs across their life-span.

Description of Duties:
• Assess patients’ and clients’ nutritional and health needs as related to nutrition utilizing nutrition history, considering patient diagnosis and medical needs, projected health and patient outcomes, and evaluating dietary needs and restrictions.
• Consults with providers, healthcare professionals and other sources to promote best practices when assessing the patients’ needs and participating in an Interprofessional environment to contribute to the overall care plan or a customized care plan.
• Provides patients and clients with professional nutritional counseling on nutritional issues and healthy eating habits, especially as this applies to their medical diagnosis.
• Develops meal and nutritional plans, with consideration for medical diagnosis, client’s preferences and budget and provides plan revisions as needed.
• Provides a comprehensive assessment of nutritional status, determines patient’s nutrient needs and develops a comprehensive plan of care by using department established guidelines.
• Creates and presents educational materials and presentations for better health and personal care related to nutrition. May hold regular nutritional sessions/classes. May offer/oversee ADA educational classes.
• Documents nutrition plan in the electronic medical record within 24-72 hours. All notes to be completed and all members of the medical team to be informed of the nutritional plan.
• Consults and counsels patient’s families to promote the implementation of the nutritional plan at home.
• Analyzes, compares and evaluates various courses of action and has the authority to make independent decisions on matters of significance, free from immediate direction, within the scope of responsibilities.
• Keeps abreast of nutritional science and latest research and incorporates to current clinical care as appropriate.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Supervision Received:
General supervision from assigned supervisor.

Supervision Given:
Direct supervision of assigned staff.

Required Education:
Bachelor’s degree in Nutrition or Dietetics from an accredited university.

Preferred Education:
Master’s degree in Nutrition or Dietetics from an accredited university.

Licenses/Certifications:
Current Registered Dietician (RD) with the Commission of Dietetic Registration (CDR). Current Licensed Dietitian (LD) with Texas State Board of Examiners of Dietitians.

Required Experience:
One (1) years of experience as a Licensed dietician.

Preferred Experience:
Clinical nutritional/dietician experience either in an inpatient role or ambulatory clinical role.

Equipment:
Use of standard office/clinical equipment. Electronic Medical Record system. Other equipment as related to nutritional assessment.

Working Conditions:
Can successfully perform all required duties. Clinical and patient care environment; some travel and weekend work is required. Exerting up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.

Other:
Exceptional planning and organizational skills. Ability to work and communicate easily with patients and their families across the life span. Good customer service Strong academic background. Clinical ability to calculate calories needed and specific calculations of specific ingredients in diet such as protein, fat, carbs and others. Ability to chart on specific graphic charts and good decision making skills. Resourceful in searching for additional data and literature on specific diagnoses.
