Position:

The department of Asian American Studies at California State University, Northridge (CSUN) is seeking a tenure-track faculty member in Critical Pacific Islander & Oceania Studies at the rank of Assistant Professor.

The successful candidate will teach Asian American Studies and Pacific Islander Studies and have research interests in issues that shape Pacific Islander communities. The candidate's research will center Indigenous epistemologies that emphasize sovereignty, self-determination, dignity, and resiliency through an analysis of imperialism, colonialism, militarism, and globalization. The candidate will actively engage in community organizing and activism.

In addition to teaching, the position requires weekly office hours, attending faculty meetings, and service to the department, college, and university. The successful candidate will be held to the standards and requirements of the college and department in which he/she/they is/are housed for recommending tenure and promotion.

Required Qualifications:

As a Hispanic-serving Institution (HSI), inclusiveness and diversity are integral to CSUN's commitment to excellence in teaching, research, and engagement. As of Fall 2020, CSUN enrolls ~40,000 students, where 56% are Latinx, 20.8% are White, 9.3% are Asian American, 4.8% are Black/African American, 0.1% are Native American, and 0.1% are Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander. The successful candidate will help the Department achieve equitable outcomes for all students through teaching, student mentorship, scholarship, and service.

• Doctoral or Terminal Degree from an accredited institution in Ethnic Studies, American Studies or closely related field. Candidates who earn their doctorate or terminal degree by August 1, 2023 will be considered.
• Research and scholarly expertise in Pacific Islander Studies, Indigenous Studies, Native Hawaiian Studies, or closely related fields.
• Evidence of or potential for excellence in teaching Asian American Studies or Pacific Islander Studies

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience using or potential for employing culturally responsive pedagogy in which effective engagement and learning occur among a racially diverse student population
• Experience or potential for creating a student-centered learning environment(s)
• Experience or potential for adopting inclusive approaches to mentoring
• Experience or potential research experience that includes working with students from racially diverse backgrounds
• Experience or potential to develop and teach courses in areas such as mental health, religious studies, arts, activism, or environmental justice
• Community engagement or community work with Pacific Islander communities or BIPOC communities
• Potential or interest to collaborate with other Ethnic Studies programs
