Walla Walla Community College (WWCC) is seeking applicants for a full-time Science Lab Manager/Tutoring-Learning Center Coordinator at the Clarkston campus.

General Responsibilities:

This is a multifaceted, educational support position designed to promote student success on the Clarkston Campus. This position will provide direct support for science lab instruction by working collaboratively with Science faculty, managing science laboratories, and by providing key leadership with respect to the oversight and coordination of The Tutoring and Learning Center (TLC) in Clarkston.

Science Lab Management:

  • Collaborate with science faculty to determine apparatus and set up needs for pending lab sessions.
  • Anticipate and order materials, supplies and equipment to ensure that lab instruction can occur. Create and maintain an electronic record of purchases to enable quick retrieval and summary.
  • Assist students in learning the specifics of lab equipment and materials to be used during the lab exercise, emphasizing safety and appropriate handling of lab equipment and materials.
  • Maintain laboratory spaces to ensure a safe, clean, comfortable and well-lighted environment. Maintain lab equipment to meet teaching requirements.
  • Maintain a safe, secure, well-organized and adequately stocked storage space for laboratory apparatus, glassware, instrumentation, chemicals, preserved animal tissues, and live cultures.
  • Care for live small animal and plant residents of the lab space.
  • Perform or arrange for regular preventive maintenance and repair on scientific instruments and devices including (but not limited to) microscopes, natural gas burners, centrifuges, autoclaves, water deionizers, pH meters, incubators, hot plate stirrers, electronic and mechanical balances.
  • Explore maintenance agreements where feasible and logical.
  • Notify the maintenance and custodial staff of facility maintenance and repair needs.
  • Take the lead in developing safe laboratory standards; safe procurement, handling, storage and disposal standards of hazardous chemicals and live and preserved biological specimens; and safe laboratory environmental standards. Bring safety concerns to science faculty and supervisor.
  • Collaborate and assist Clarkston science in the exploration of expanded science offerings toward the goal of an Associate of Science-Transfer at the Clarkston Campus. Explore the possible expansion of science offerings toward more general interest rather than to specifically meet graduation requirements.
  • Explore and develop a model for “Kids College” on the Clarkston Campus or other related instructional events and activities by embedding kid-sized science classes during the regular instruction day in the summer.
  • Assist science faculty and other College personnel in recruiting events within the service area.
  • Select, hire, train and monitor student employees for work in the science labs. Ensure student employee understands and practices safety in the science labs.
  • Evaluate and assess the appropriateness and quality of donations and gifts to the science programs/labs.
  • Acknowledge gifted funds or donations in a timely manner by notifying Clarkston Campus Dean and/or Academic Transfer Dean of purchases so that donor can be thanked.

  • Tutoring and Learning Center Coordinator:
  • Recruit, screen, hire, train and schedule tutors (student and non-student). Assist tutors in recording and submitting work hours to payroll.
  • Market the Tutoring and Learning Center internally via websites, emails, fliers, and class visits, Canvas communications, etc.
  • Participate in College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) training and accreditation process.
  • Supervise and mentor tutors. Inform and include if needed the Clarkston Campus Dean and/or TLC Director when disciplinary action is required.
  • Participate in data collection adhering to Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), state and institutional guidelines regarding student privacy.
  • Collaborate with campus faculty and the Dean of Access and Opportunity to maintain currency and efficacy of the instructional support provided by the tutoring staff. Work with all programs to discover tutoring needs and opportunities to assist students.
  • Serve as a tutor for advanced course work in the incumbent's area of expertise.
  • Assist in gathering retention data from the learning center.



  • Essential Functions:

    Science Laboratory Manager
  • Lab set up including consultation with instructional faculty, ordering, preparing, demonstrating and maintaining use of all equipment, apparatus, supplies and materials.
  • Supervise Clarkston students in lab to potentially facilitate remote instruction.
  • Create and maintain a clean and safe, well-organized space for all laboratory chemicals, supplies, materials, live cultures, live animals and plants, preserved animal tissues and equipment, apparatus, glassware, materials and supplies.

  • Tutor Coordinator Learning Center
  • Coordination of Tutoring and Learning Center including recruiting, screening, hiring, training and scheduling student and non-student tutors; creating tutor schedule for the campus; conducting one-on-one and small group tutoring.


  • Education Support
  • Consult with instructional faculty regarding tutoring needs, market the learning center/college services
  • Participate in campus activities and committees, taskforces, recruitment activities, organizations as assigned or agreed upon with supervisor.


  • Competencies

    The successful candidate will have the ability to:


  • Acquire knowledge and familiarity of course content for lab science courses offered at the Clarkston Campus.
  • Understand purchasing and inventory control practices.
  • Understand and practice appropriate conservation and safe handling and disposal procedures.
  • Acquire understanding and knowledge of CRLA principles and practices as well as the College's tutoring practices.
  • Acquire understanding and knowledge of student employee hiring, scheduling, monitoring and time-worked record keeping and reporting practices.
  • Understand and practices the WWCC student employee hiring protocol when selecting students for the tutoring center and/or science labs.

  • Required Qualifications:
    Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered at the discretion of the college.

  • A bachelor's degree in science field and/or mathematics.
  • Previous science lab management experience; and
  • Previous experience with student tutoring and/or coordinative tutoring activities.

  • Preferred/Desired Qualifications:
  • A master's degree or higher in a science field.
  • Experience teaching a lecture/lab science class at the post-secondary level and
  • Experience using varied methods of instruction to address student-learning styles.


  • Conditions/Terms of Employment

    This classified position is in a bargaining unit for which WPEA Higher Ed is the exclusive representative.

    Incumbent must handle live and preserved biologics. The incumbent will also oversee the physical space used by the Tutoring and Learning Center. Incumbent's assigned work schedule will be split between the laboratory sessions scheduled for each quarter and the scheduled tutoring hours. The incumbent's schedule may fluctuate from one quarter to another but typically the position is on a 7:30am-4: 30pm, Monday through Friday schedule, with occasional weekend tasks. During the summer, work schedule is Monday through Thursday 10-hours each day. Approximately 25 hours per week spent managing the science laboratories and 15 hours per week coordinative the Tutoring and Learning Center activities. Limited travel required.

    Incumbent will interact with administrators, faculty, staff, student workers and non-student hourly workers. Incumbent will be assigned work through verbal and written direction referenced by the position descriptions. The incumbent will recruit, screen, hire, train, schedule, direct and manage student and non-student tutors.

    The college has an excellent benefit program including medical, dental, life and long-term disability insurance; paid sick leave; paid vacation leave; and retirement plan. All full-time employees will automatically have 3% of taxable income deferred into the State of Washington Deferred Compensation Program (DCP) unless declined at time of hire. WWCC requires all employees to participate in direct deposit for payment of salary. The college is tobacco free.
