The Teaching and Learning
Specialist will be a key member of the Center for Teaching and
Scholarly Excellence (CTSE) team. Reporting to the Associate
Director for Educational Development, the Teaching and Learning
Specialist will promote evidence-based, equity-minded course design
and teaching practices by developing resources, designing and
facilitating workshops and other programming, and engaging in
consultations that speak to the interests and concerns of Suffolks
teaching community.
Areas of Responsibility
Resource development-Research, develop, and maintain resources that
support Suffolks teaching community to explore and adopt inclusive
and innovative course design and teaching practices. Examples
include creating or revising content for the CTSE website,
contributing items to the CTSE newsletter, and developing
step-by-step guides.
Workshop design and facilitation- Design and facilitate workshops
and other programming, such as learning circles or reading groups.
Collect feedback about programming, document attendance, and follow
up with participants as appropriate.
Consultations- Provide confidential consultations to support
instructors teaching interests and concerns. Examples include
offering feedback about syllabi or other course materials,
discussing strategies for engaging students in different learning
environments, and supporting instructors to collect and interpret
feedback from their students. Conduct research relevant to
consultation topics, document consultation participation, and
follow up with participants as appropriate.
Ongoing learning and professional development- Stay abreast of new
research and trends related to teaching and learning. Engage with
professional organizations to deepen expertise.
Support of CTSE projects- Support major CTSE events, such as New
Faculty Orientation and the Symposium on Innovation in Teaching and
Learning. Contribute to CTSE projects, such as the annual
report.
PhD, EdD, or equivalent, either in-hand or expected by start
date.
2+ years of educational development experience.
2+ years of college-level teaching experience.
Strong knowledge base in the science of learning, as well as
inclusive course design and teaching practices. Demonstrated
success in practical application of this knowledge.
Exceptional interpersonal skills. Ability to establish rapport and
build relationships with faculty and other colleagues with diverse
social identities, teaching philosophies, disciplinary contexts,
and institutional roles.
Exceptional communication skills, with especially strong skills in
active listening, as well as writing and speaking with different
audiences in mind.
Ability to maintain confidentiality.
Demonstrated success working in highly collaborative
environments.
Strong project management and organizational skills. Ability to
plan projects, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines, while also
triaging interruptions.
Ability to adapt in response to new initiatives and emerging
needs.
Desire to engage in ongoing professional growth and reflective
practice.
