Job Description Summary
The Senior Research Investigator will design, initiate, implement, and complete surgical data science studies within the Penn Computer Assisted Surgery and Outcomes Laboratory in the division of GI surgery and the General Robotics, Automation, Sensing, and Perception Laboratory. The candidate will have a leadership role and will be responsible for the co-supervision of technical (i.e., engineering, computer science) members of the research team working in the lab. The candidate will be independent, self-driven, organized, and possess excellent leadership, managerial, and scientific writing skills. The highly qualified candidate will have previous experience leading projects and the position will offer further opportunities for growth, independence, and teaching in a dynamic lab composed of both clinicians and data scientists/engineers. The individual will be working in a regulated research environment and will have the ability to conceive and develop medical solutions in close collaboration with medical professionals. They will help to design the architecture for flow of surgical data from the operating room to the laboratory, including appropriate deidentification, annotation, and storage. The individual will lead the development and testing of machine learning models that utilize various sensor modalities, including video, kinematics, and other surgical sensor data, to predict surgical performance and provide automated feedback. The individual will liaise with teams within research information systems and clinical teams as well as with Penn Engineering researchers and staff to ensure safe, appropriate, and effective handling of surgical data for research purposes given the novel nature of the research to Penn Medicine. This individual will participate in manuscript preparation, presentations, conferences, grant writing and execution, and generation of progress reports for research sponsors and the investigative team. This individual must comply with applicable regulations concerning environmental health and safety, patient confidentiality, and recordkeeping. The envisioned individual must have doctoral level experience with preference for completion of post-doctoral training and experience with surgical technologies.

Position is contingent upon continued grant funding.

Ph.D. or other equivalent doctoral degree and 5 to 7 years of relevant experience

Salary offers are made based on the candidate's qualifications, experience, skills, and education as they directly relate to the requirements of the position, as well as internal and market factors and grade profile.
