Description

Johns Hopkins University invites nominations and applications for the position of Director of Special Projects. The Director will play a key role in supporting the strategic and operational projects in the School of Arts and Sciences. The position will support the work of the school’s deans. He/she will assist in developing strategic initiatives and special projects in the area of faculty, undergraduate education, graduate education, academic programs, and other administrative priorities.

The Director of Special Projects works collaboratively with key members of leadership across the institution, including vice presidents, deans, directors, affiliated divisions, institutions, legal advisors, and University Administrative Staff, as well as School of Arts and Sciences faculty and staff. The position reports to the Associate Dean for Strategic Initiatives.

Key Responsibilities
  • Works closely with the deans in tracking plans to ensure that strategic objectives and initiatives across the School of Arts and Sciences are successfully implemented, managed and maintained in order to promote a competitive advantage.
  • Manages the planning, design, development and implementation of short and long-term projects for the school. Plans, coordinates, schedules, and organizes project activities to meet objectives.
  • Researches, gathers, organizes and summarizes data for special projects. Develops, evaluates, recommends and implements procedures for data acquisition, management and quality control. Analyzes data for trends or conclusions and presents results and recommendations to school leadership.
  • Prepares status reports on project plans, progress and results of activities; develops presentations and proposals as needed by the deans.
  • Coordinates and assembles confidential documentation. Ensures completeness and accuracy of the documentation for submission to school, department, or division for review and/or approval. Maintains confidential files. Coordinates and monitors distribution of confidential materials.
  • Serves as key resource for project information. Interfaces with faculty, staff, and with a broad network of external constituencies.
  • Coordinates and/or links project operations with other administrative functions on and off campus and/or within the school, department or division.
  • Serves on special committees and supports strategic projects within the School of Arts and Sciences and for broader university-wide initiatives.
Qualifications
  • At least three years (7 years preferred) of progressively responsible operations experience, preferably in a large, complex and decentralized higher education organization.
  • Understanding of and commitment to the mission of research and teaching in a premier university.
  • Ability to inspire trust and work collegially with staff, faculty members, school and campus officers, university administrators, alumni, students, benefactors, and business partners.
  • Demonstrated ability to achieve consensus and influence a wide range of people at various levels to achieve results in a collaborative decision-making environment.
  • Advanced knowledge of organizational processes, protocols and procedures.
  • Excellent consulting, relationship building and strategic thinking skills.
  • Advanced knowledge of the organizational environment of higher education and large research universities to understand priorities, issues, motivations and constraints.
  • Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal; experience and skill in public speaking and presentations.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships and alumni and community leaders.
  • Ability to deal with sensitive and highly confidential information and skill in handling sensitive situations with discretion.
  • Ability to generate innovative ideas, originate action without instruction, establish goals and priorities in the development of programs, plan and complete projects on time under conditions of fluctuating workload.
  • Skill in working independently and following through on assignments with minimal direction.
  • Strong data management and computer skills including the full Microsoft Office suite.
  • Political acumen to enable sound independent political judgments and to work effectively with diverse internal and external constituencies including top administrators, faculty, staff, students, parents, alumni, high level donors, community and business leaders, opinion leaders, and elected officials at all levels and their staffs.
  • Unquestionable integrity, strong work ethic and resiliency required. Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion.
Education
  • Earned PhD, doctorate degree, or JD degree in relevant field.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
