University Counselor I-Student Success Coach SW

Wayne State University is searching for an experienced University Counselor I-Student Success Coach SW at its Detroit campus location.

Essential functions (job duties):

University Counselor I - Success Coach will work with students enrolled in the Master of Social Work online program. The University Counselor I - Success Coach will help students develop skills, behaviors, and habits that contribute to success in college. These includes academic and career goal setting, learning strategies, time management and organization, self-regulation, and self-efficacy. University Counselor I - Success Coache will provide one-on-one support for students to maximize their academic and experiential learning and foster and understanding of university policies and supports.

Partner with faculty, academic advisors, and other staff to handle complex issues & problems for individual students.

Develop communication techniques that engage students as appropriate on a regular basis.

Communicate effectively and accurately academic & non-academic requirements, policies & procedures to students, staff, and faculty.

Continuously develop knowledge of best practices and tools in the areas of student retention.

Develop & run intervention programs to promote success strategies for students, including orientation and community building opportunities.

Reduce students’ obstacles to success through problem-solving, skill-building (eg. Time management, study skills, stress reduction), referral, and information.

Prepare reports on student success and retention data to inform programmatic changes.

Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Education Bachelor's degree

Experience Experienced (minimum 2 years of job-related experience)
Experienced working with online education programs
Experienced working with students
Knowledge of coaching, instructional & mentoring techniques
Knowledge of processes and resources for organizing and leading group and collaborative activities
Knowledge of traditional and online course practices and procedures
Knowledge of trends, issues, and best practices relevant to the position

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

COMMUNICATIONS SKILLS: Ability to communicate clearly, concisely, and professionally both orally and in writing. Strong interpersonal skills are a must. Ability to work successfully with persons from diverse backgrounds.

PLANNING AND ORGANIZATION: Ability to manage several projects simultaneously, prioritize and plan work activities while meeting respective deadlines. Strong organizational and time-management skills required. Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously in a deadline-oriented environment.

ANALYTICAL AND PRESENTATION SKILLS: Ability to evaluate, interpret, and present complex information effectively in professionally prepared documents or presentations. Must possess a demonstrated attention to detail in order to achieve a high degree of accuracy.

TECHNICAL SKILLS: Proficient in the use of complex administrative systems software. Proficient with Microsoft Office suite, especially Word and Excel.

LEARNING AGILITY: Independent and innovative self-starter who displays an ability to learn quickly and easily adapts to changing situations. Experience researching topics to gain knowledge and understanding when information gaps exist.

TEAMWORK: Ability to collaborate with faculty, staff, and students to implement best practices and engage with students effectively. Ability to collaborate across university departments to best support students and provide access to university resources.
