Job Summary
The Coordinator of the First-Year/Second Year Experience Program leads the planning and execution of programs and services that facilitate the transition of first-year students to the demands of academic life at Alcorn State University. The Coordinator also develops and executes a separate set of activities designed to meet the unique needs of second-year students returning to the university after the first year of college. These programs focus on strengthening second-year students for advanced study in the various disciplines and career guidance.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
KNOWLEDGE OF :
● Counseling practices, theories and techniques, theories of learning
and human development, and relevant and desirable student
learning outcomes; including intellectual growth, realistic self-
appraisal, enhanced self-esteem, clarified values, career choices
and achievement of personal and educational goals.
● Teaching post-secondary students to make sound education
planning decisions and develop academic success skills.
● Computer technology skills including a working knowledge of
Microsoft Office, email/internet applications, social networking and
student information systems such as Banner.
● Federal, state and local laws regarding administration of tests used
to measure academic skills for college entrance and assessment.
SKILLS TO:
● Communicate effectively both oral and written
● Interact effectively with students
● Efficiently use computer technology to navigate software
applications and information systems
● Track students’ progress
● Keep effective notes and reports
ABILITY TO :
● Work as a team member, initiate projects independently, multi-
task and prioritize tasks according to university needs
● Be organized and complete administrative tasks as required
● Maintain accurate records and meet established timelines

Essential Job Functions
- Ability to administer the First/Second Year Experience program; plan, organize, and coordinate assigned function, activities, services, and operations of the program; perform a full range of technical, program support, and clerical duties in support of the program; coordinate with other departments and program areas
- Develops yearly calender of events, workshops, and other schedules related to activities and services; review, update, and inform others of essential timelines; coordinate assigned activities; ensure the timely completion of work in accordance with established policies, procedures, and standards
- Evaluates progress of new student programs to ensure continuous improvement and growth
- In collaboration with the Office of Institutional Research, tracks student enrollment and retention statistics, gathers data, and writes reports regarding program success and impact
- Ability to teach post-secondary students to make sound education planning decisions and develop academic success skills
- Coordinates communications for the program’s website, and coordinate and supervise student leaders
- Makes effective presentations for outreach and training purposes for freshman and sophomore students
- Provides analytical data used to support student success activities and programs to the dean and retention specialist
- Provides guidance to develop, implement, and maintain effective and efficient advisement that promotes satisfactory academic performance and progression of students toward the completion of coursework and graduation.
- Master’s degree in Counseling, Education, or related field required. Doctorate in Education or an academic field preferred;
- A minimum of (5) years of counseling or other appropriate experience, and a demonstrated experience of having worked with students in an academic environment preferred.
