Classification Title: Student Services Professional III

Classification Salary Range: $5,025 - $7,159 per month.

The anticipated hiring range for this position is $5,025 - $5,250 per month.

The final salary is dependent upon qualifications and experience.

About the Department/Position:

Under the general direction of the Black Resource Center Program Director, the incumbent will aid in developing and implementing an array of various culturally relevant programs, events, and activities specifically designed for students who identify as Black/African American, with the purpose of improving Black/African American student academic success, graduation, retention, leadership and professional development, and the overall Black student experience. The position assists in the creation and implementation of comprehensive activities, events, programs, workshops and service, provides referrals to on-campus services. Provides lead work direction and mentorship to student staff and develops student assistant training and workshops. Assesses the needs of Black students and aids in the tracking and gathering of data to develop reports and inform programming and services.

24-hour on call responsibilities during any overnight programs (i.e., retreats); occasional weekends and evenings as needed.

Overview of Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Assists in the creation and implementation of comprehensive activities, events, programs, and services guided by an Afrocentric approach, specifically designed to increase the overall success and sense of belonging of Black/African American students.
  • Aids in the development of workshop curriculum regarding relevant and timely topics including but not limited to financial literacy, graduate/professional school, college success skills, and personal and professional development.
  • Helps promotes the academic success, cultural affirmation, and social integration of Black/African American students, with the goal of closing the educational equity gap and improving CSUDH's performance in the access, retention, and graduation of Black/African American students.
  • Provides lead work direction to 3-6 student staff including undergraduate and graduate student assistants and/or non-paid interns/volunteers.
  • Analyzes results from reports that track and collect relevant data about Black/African American students on campus as related to needs assessment, access, persistence, and 4- and 6-year graduation rates.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Education: Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field, including or supplemented by upper division or graduate course work in counseling techniques, interviewing, and conflict resolution where such are job-related.
  • Experience: Equivalent of three (3) years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience. One year in the program area to which assigned may be preferred but is not required.
  • A master's degree in counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or a directly related field may be substituted for one year of experience. A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling or guidance may be substituted for the three years of experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional career or personal counseling.
  • Valid California Driver's License

  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
    • Knowledge and competence in diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice educational program development and implementation.
    • Knowledge and understanding of unique challenges/issues that impact Black/African American students.
    • Ability to plan, develop, coordinate, and implement complex events, programs, and activities.
    • Ability to collect, compile, and analyze data and prepare reports.
    • Demonstrated skill in assisting and speaking with persons of various ages, socio-economic, cultural and/or education backgrounds.

    Preferred Qualifications:
    • Education: master's degree in student development in higher education, ethnic/cultural studies, counseling, or related field.
    • Experience: Equivalent of three years progressively responsible professional student service work experience, with one year in the program area to which assigned.
    • Knowledge of current and historical local, state, and national trends, challenges and opportunities affecting the Black/American community.
    • Knowledge of educational, social, and political issues affecting the Black/African American community.
    • Knowledge of intersecting issues related to the Black/African American communities, including race, ethnicity, age, sex, gender, disability status, citizenship status, socioeconomic status, etc.
    • Working knowledge of assessment and evaluation practices and procedures.
    • Working knowledge of Campus Labs/Baseline, EAB/Navigate, PeopleSoft
    • Experience with working with the Black/African American community, preferably within a higher education setting.
    • Flexibility with changes in workload, under pressure of deadlines, competing requirements, heavy workload, and constant interruptions.
    • Skill in working independently with minimal direction, in setting priorities and schedules and in identifying and adhering to departmental objectives.
    • Interpersonal skills to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships and communicate clearly and effectively with vendors, staff, peers, administrators, Campus personnel, clients, state officials, and the public.
