Essential Functions (Job Duties):

Oversees and manages design and growth of live, interactive, original daily programming. Provides direct supervision of the hosts and producers, as well as daily content production, including breaking news, multi-platform and special broadcasts. Ensures hosts and producers are focusing on significant topics that meet our standards for journalistic excellence. Reports to General Manager, WDET.

Provides general oversight of WDET's live, daily programming. Plans, develops and implements informational and cultural content to increase and maintain audience base and market share. Leads daily show production debrief and planning meetings. Conducts reviews of show content and presentation with production staff and host. Establishes and implements daily and long-term production schedules. Researches, edits, and assigns story research, special features, and series. Plans and completes live remote broadcasts. Plans for special show opportunities for major upcoming news events. Monitors show broadcasts and web posts and provides verbal and written feedback. Monitors expenditures.

Develops and implements strategies designed to broaden content through the integration of audio from news reports, pre-recorded interviews, vox, listener calls, and popular culture media (film, television, podcasts, web video). Oversees integration of social media material into live broadcasts. Coaches and provides guidance regarding content. Inspires staff to produce consistently compelling, engaging and creative programming. Oversees the incorporation of social media and digital journalism into topic, source and story development, increasing number and diversity of sources and community contacts.

Coordinates show's presentation of breaking news coverage and major news events with the WDET newsroom and national production partners. Ensures inclusion of major news topics in the show in a timely manner.

Manages professional and technical support personnel. Recruits, hires, trains, evaluates and disciplines assigned staff (show host and producers). Fosters trust and collaboration among staff and colleagues. Participates in daily editorial meetings.

Performs on-air and other fundraising duties.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Education:
Requires a Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Communications, Media Studies, or a related field from an accredited college or university. Candidates with an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Experience:
Requires a minimum of 3 to 4 years experience building and managing audio teams, as well as managing complex editorial projects.

Significant daily show management experience required.

Demonstrated experience managing and developing staff and talent required.

Demonstrated experience covering breaking news required.

News and current affairs broadcast experience required. Ability and willingness to work varied shifts as events require.

ProTools, Audition or similar digital editing skills preferred. General familiarity with the public radio system preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Writes clearly and informatively. Ability to adjust writing style to meet medium or audience needs. Deep familiarity with the principles of writing and editing for broadcast.

Prioritizes and plans work activities; able to adapt to rapidly changing conditions. Ability to complete tasks correctly, on time and within budget.

Possesses solid news judgement. Ability to plan for discussion/coverage of pre-planned major news events within the show.

Applies interpersonal and presentation skills to provide information; ability to listen and obtain relevant clarification; responds well to questions; can speak clearly in positive or negative situations.

Ability to work collaboratively and cooperatively with multiple WDET teams. Must have ability to work in a live program environment and remain poised under pressure.

Awareness of current events, thought leaders and issues of importance to Metro Detroiters.

Knowledge of multiple media production (radio, web), editorial standards/management, and journalism practices. Ability to utilize social and digital media to engage audiences. Experience using a Content Management System to produce web content.

Exercises superior independent judgment, decision making and leadership skills.

Understands objectives and mission of department and work unit. Monitors own work to ensure quality. Performs work with concentration, focus and accuracy. Works effectively and completes quality work in a timely manner to meet deadlines.
