Essential Functions (Job Duties):

Medical Director of the MI Poison & Drug Information Center (MiPDC). This position is responsible for providing medical oversight of the Poison Center’s daily operation and ensures that the medical direction given to the public or health care providers is correct and within the existing national standards or expert consensus. Candidate must maintain regulatory compliance of Poison Center with local, state, and federal governing bodies and work to maintain Poison Center national accreditation. The MD is also intimately involved in education with the toxicology rotation, Medical Toxicology fellowship and Poison Information personnel and provision of out and inpatient toxicology evaluation and treatment through the Toxicology service.

Administrative  
Oversee clinical operations of the Poison Center, maintains staff competency in management of poisoned patients through CME efforts, publications, research, and toxicology meeting attendance, participation in quality assurance and quality maintenance programs such as daily review of charts of hospitalized cases, provides written feedback to PC staff with regard to quality of treatment advice and follow-up information .

Ensures timely review and updating of clinical and treatment guidelines. Develops, maintains and implements operational policies and procedures. Consults with and assists the Administrative Director in issues of patient care, economics, education, outreach and community activities. 

Coordination and participation in local, state, regional and federal activities relating to Hazardous Materials and/or Chemical, Biological, Explosive, Radiologic, and Nuclear events and training, working with local, state, regional, and federal agencies in providing surge capacity and coordination for potential epidemics and chemical releases. Participates in active surveillance for ongoing drug trends and biochemical surveillance. Maintains regulatory compliance of Poison Center with local, state, and federal governing bodies .

Clinical  
Provide clinical bedside and telephone consultation and supervise residents, fellows, and students .
Provides appropriate clinical and technical reference resources for staff.
Regularly reviews the current pertinent and technical reference resources for PC staff. 

Education  
Oversee educational operations of the Poison Center. Provide outreach lectures on toxicology to health care professionals throughout the PC geographic service area. Actively participates in education of health care providers and Poison Specialists/Poison Information Providers.  Advanced Hazmat Life Support Instructor.

Research  
Participates in collaborative research related to medical toxicology or acts as Principle Investigator/personnel for grants and research, providing mentorship for PC staff, fellows, and residents. 

Qualifications:

Medical degree from an accredited medical school required.

Valid Michigan medical license required.

Trained in residency program with Fellowship and certification in Medical Toxicology.

Must be a member of the American College of Medical Toxicology and/or American Board of Medical Toxicology, American Academy of Clinical Toxicology, and the American Association of Poison Control Centers.

Significant teaching experience in academic emergency medicine.

Demonstrated commitment to diversity and equity.

Knowledge of basic and/or clinical science research processes and procedures with demonstrated expertise as applicable.

Ability to provide quality instruction to a variety of students.

Demonstrated ethical conduct, professionalism, interpersonal skills and management abilities.

Rank commensurate with credentials.

Multiple year experience as a practicing Medical Toxicologist.

Experience as an effective educator for medical and laypeople.

5-10 years clinical experience in primary medical specialty.
