Wayne State University is searching for an experienced Director, Student Academic Success at its Detroit campus location.

Essential functions (job duties):

Job Purpose
The Director, Student Academic Success, will provide strategic oversight of the Academic Success Center and its suite of services, programs and initiatives. The Director will also lead campus-wide efforts related to academic support initiatives and collaborations designed to increase student retention and timely degree completion. Reports to assistant vice president for student success.

Essential Functions

Manage the daily operations of the Academic Success Center to provide comprehensive learning support for all students including peer-assisted learning (tutoring, supplemental instruction, etc.), academic success coaching and study skills development, and structured support for students in academic recovery.

Develop and maintain a system to track and monitor student participation in academic support services. Create and maintain learning outcomes, assessment strategies and conduct assessment, including documenting comprehensiveness of services provided and student learning achieved in the Academic Success Center.

Research and remain current on best practices in learning and academic support; make recommendations for improving student academic support services, practices, policies, and procedures in support of student success.

Collaborate with leadership in University Advising, Student Disability Services, Warrior 360, Career Services and other student support units to create comprehensive wrap-around support for students experiencing academic challenges.

Collaborate with faculty, school/college leadership and other academic stakeholders to ensure academic support programming is in alignment with curriculum and curricular innovations. Develop strategies to increase the role of academic departments in learning support programming.

Perform personnel management functions. Interview, develop and evaluate personnel. Set clear direction, manage workflow of subordinate staff and determine appropriate staffing levels to meet priorities and established deadlines.

Manage annual budget. Develop revenue and expenditure projections, approve expenditures and monitor transactions for compliance with university policy.

Qualifications:

Education

Master’s degree in higher education, student affairs or related field. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted.
Experience

Minimum 5 years of leadership experience in higher education in relevant areas: student success, student affairs, academic advising, or similar experience in customer relationship development and management.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Clear verbal and written abilities, with effective interpersonal and customer service skills. Comfortable in communicating with prospective students, parents, school administrators, and counselors in person and by telephone and email. Effective public speaker with informative and persuasive speaking skills. Excel in formulating clear and concise email messages. Demonstrated ability to create outreach messages that help achieve yield goals.

Ability to compare, contrast and quality check work with a keen attention to detail. Strong analytical skills including: critical thinking and problem solving skills. Proficient with standard office tools (word processing, spreadsheets, presentation creation), research abilities to find relevant materials using online search tools, and database management systems.

Able to effectively manage multiple priorities to accomplish required productivity goals. Capable of using CRM to maintain documentation of outreach activities and results.

Capable of identifying and collaborating with key university stakeholders, providing initial communication of relevant issues to team, then monitoring progress of further development. Demonstrated capability of working as an integral member of a goal-oriented, data-driven enrollment management team.

Emphasize activities that lead to effective results focused on established goals in market segments to meet University enrollment and retention goals. Use data-driven decision making model to assess effectiveness, analyze results, and shape future projects. Seek out additional opportunities for the outreach program and its partners that may deliver further results.

Proficient in using technology to develop, implement, track and analyze programs designed to maximize outreach efforts using student information systems (Banner, Cherwell, or PeopleSoft), CRM functionality and other tools as necessary. Demonstrated ability to aggregate and analyze data to evaluate outcomes towards set performance goals. Experience with database query and table design.

Extensive working knowledge of up-to-date Admissions, Financial Aid, Student Accounts, and Records and Registration processes.
