Essential Functions (Job Duties):

JOB PURPOSE

Provide leadership in residence operations in a way that maintains positive, multicultural, and learning centered communities. Facilitates and develops a nurturing residential community. This is a three year term limited position with the opportunity for a fourth year at institutional discretion.
Reports to Associate Director.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Serve as the leader for a residential community of 350+ students. Evaluate any existing or potential methodologies for Residential Life to contribute to student academic success, and work with departmental leadership to address opportunities. Advise and support the Hall/Community Council and Residence Hall Association. Follow established University protocols, policies and procedures to encourage and ensure student safety & security. Communicate and promote University policies and procedures including the Community Living Guide and Housing judicial process. Collaborate with other professional staff and facilities staff to open and close the housing communities.

Select, train, and supervise Resident Advisors and Community Assistants. Coordinate ongoing student leadership training through team building activities, professional development workshops, etc. Coordinate weekly staff meetings that update and reinforce training objectives and intentionally focus on individual and staff development. Hold one-on-ones with student leaders to discuss work performance, academics, professional/personal development, and evaluations. Provide facilitation for conflict resolution issues, assist students struggling with mental health and personal issues, and refer students to appropriate University and community resources. Work closely with the facilities, Corvias, and Special Purpose Entity) staff to ensure work orders and health and safety inspections are complete.

Promote, encourage and reward student learning, academic success, and co-curricular involvement through the Residential Curriculum. Foster an atmosphere of respect for individual differences and community values. Manage a programming and training budget for assigned community, reconciling receipts, procuring program and desk supplies. Develop and facilitate curriculum for the ongoing training of 90 Resident Advisors.

Participate in a rotating on-call schedule, providing emergency and crisis response for students and family members for an area that houses approximately 3,900 students.

Select, train, and co-supervise the full-time staff responsible for supporting the front desk operations and provide functional supervision for the desk assistants. Ensure all student staff understand the values, mission and commitment required to be a part of the Housing and Residential Life team. Understand and follow union policies and procedures.

Participate in departmental and division-wide committees. Provide leadership support for a collateral assignment in areas such as leadership, selection, training, academic success, recognition, diversity and front desk management. Provide supervision of the summer conference or spring / summer staff.

Unique Duties:

This is a three (3) year term-limited position with the opportunity for a fourth year. The anticipated start date is ASAP Starting compensation will typically include a salary of $47,476 and an on-campus apartment and meal plan.

Qualifications:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION:
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college of university in Higher Education Administration, Student Development or a related field. Master's degree strongly preferred.

EXPERIENCE:
Two years relevant experience in a residence hall or campus apartment as a graduate or professional.

General knowledge of educational and developmental needs of student population. Familiarity with University programs and policies that impact student life and activities.

Effective interpersonal and customer service skills. Ability to handle high pressure situations, including dealing with sensitive and confidential human relations situations.

Ability to delegate work, set clear direction, and manage workflow. Strong mentoring and coaching skills. Ability to train student leaders and develop subordinates' skills. Ability to foster teamwork among various staff and student leaders. Ability to assess and provide performance feedback.

Ability to compare, contrast and quality check work with a keen attention to detail. Strong analytical skills including; critical thinking, problem solving skills.

Proficient in the use of Wayne State systems, especially Banner HMS. Proficient in Microsoft Office Tools.

Ability to carry out and present special projects with little or no supervision. Ability to meet deadlines

Preferred Qualifications:

Master's degree strongly preferred.
