Wayne State University is searching for an experienced Assistant Professor (Teaching) Core Studio (Studio Foundations) at its Detroit campus location.

Essential functions (job duties):

POSITION: The College of Fine, Performing and Communication Arts of Wayne State University is seeking qualified candidates for a full-time non-tenure track appointment as Assistant Professor of Teaching in Core Studio in the James Pearson Duffy Department of Art and Art History. The job begins no later than August 17, 2023; salary is competitive and commensurate with experience.

RESPONSIBILITIES: We are seeking a designer or artist to teach courses in Core Studio (Studio Foundations), with an emphasis in time-based media and secondary emphasis that may include, but is not limited to, one of the following teaching areas: print media, drawing, or UX/UI design. This is a full-time non-tenure track position. The successful candidate may teach undergraduate studios and seminars in other areas of the department that connect to the candidate's creative expertise. The candidate will join the faculty leadership team that coordinates Core Studio curriculum and course material. The candidate will conduct department and university service, contribute to curriculum development and other aspects of the intellectual life of the department, and provide appropriate professional service.

THE JAMES PEARSON DUFFY DEPARTMENT OF ART AND ART HISTORY: The department offers programs leading to the following undergraduate degrees: BA in Art, BFA in Art, BFA in Design, BA in Art History and BA or BS in Fashion Design and Merchandising. The department also offers the following graduate degrees: MA in Art, MFA in Art, and MA in Art History. The department currently has 23 full-time faculty and a staff of 10 for 30+ graduate students and 550+ undergraduate students. THE COLLEGE AND UNIVERSITY: The Department of Art and Art History is one of four departments in the College of Fine, Performing and Communication Arts; the other constituent units are the departments of Communication, Music, and Theater and Dance. The College’s faculty offer degrees ranging from the BA and various undergraduate professional degrees through MA, MMus, and MFA degrees to a PhD program in Communication. Wayne State University is a research extensive, urban institution enrolling more than 27,000 students in 400 undergraduate and graduate programs offered through the university’s 13 schools and colleges. The campus is located in Detroit’s Midtown Cultural Center, and recent construction on the campus includes three new undergraduate dormitories, the University Bookstore and Welcome Center, and the Danto Engineering Development Center.

Wayne State’s neighbors in the Midtown Cultural Center include the Detroit Public Library, Detroit Institute of Arts, Detroit Science Center, Charles Wright Museum of African American History, Detroit Historical Museum, Museum of Contemporary Art–Detroit (MOCAD), Detroit Symphony Orchestra, and Michigan Opera Theatre. The nearby New Center and Downtown areas are also home to active theatres, galleries, professional sports stadiums and entertainment venues ranging from Hard Rock Café to Detroit Artist Market and the Fox and Fisher theatres.

Qualifications:

We are seeking an exceptional designer/artist/teacher with a strong background in time-based media, defined broadly including but not limited to motion graphics, video, film, and animation. At minimum, we require an MFA in art, design or closely related field. Willingness to mentor students from diverse populations is required.

Preferred qualifications:

College level teaching experience is preferred. Experience teaching various aspects of time-based media and digital arts is preferred as is experience working across disciplinary boundaries.
