SUMMARY:

The College of Agriculture, Food Science, and Communities at Kentucky State University seeks a full-time farm and automotive mechanic to inspect, maintain, repair, assemble and overhaul farm machinery, equipment, and vehicles, such as tractors, harvesters, pumps, tilling equipment, trucks and other mechanized equipment. The ideal candidate will hold a high school diploma or GED; at least 1 year of experience that is directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified, and a certification in Automotive Service Excellence (ASE).  

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

The candidate selected for this position will: 

  • Maintain records of all shop supplies, tools, and completed repairs.
  • Create and maintain a routine schedule for servicing and maintaining farm machinery, equipment, and fleet vehicles.
  • Repair and maintain farm machinery attachments. 
  • Performs main engine, engine ignition, fuel system, and engine emission control system diagnosis and repair, including repair of diesel, gas, and alternative fuel system configurations. 
  • Perform and repair automatic, standard, and electronic transmission mechanical and control systems, including diagnosis and repair of standard transmission clutch operating systems, transaxle and transfer case systems, and all phases of final drive operation. 
  • Perform diagnosis and repair of various types of suspension, steering, power assist, and alignment systems; diagnose and repair various types of brake systems, including hydraulic systems, disc and drum brake applications, air brake systems, and anti-lock brake system operations. 
  • Perform electrical and electronic system diagnosis and repair, which may include starting and charging systems, electrical wiring systems, gauges and warning systems, and accessory systems; diagnoses and repairs ventilation systems, heat and air conditioning systems, refrigerant recovery, and mechanical system repair. 
  • Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies; promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices. 
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned. 

MINIMUM JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A high school diploma or GED
  • Ability to lift 50+ pounds
  • Effective communication skills
  • At least one year of experience as a mechanic
  • At least one year of experience maintaining farm machinery and equipment

DESIRED:

  • Certification in Automotive Service Excellence (ASE).
