Brief Description of Duties

The (Academic) Laboratory Manager provides leadership, oversight, and compliance of the operational readiness of all learning labs. The position manages hands-on learning in laboratory environments related to safety requirements, inventory management of simulation and lab equipment, faculty training, budget preparation, and supervision of students and student assistants. operations to facilitate the educational, research, and outreach missions of School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) at the University of the District of Columbia (UDC). The position serves as a liaison with department chairs, leadership, other interna/external stakeholders, and ensures SEAS compliance of safety/security regulations, best practices, and strategic alignment of School goals. Responsibilities include, but not limited to, providing organizational structure and guidance for scheduling staff, training personnel, maintaining supplies, budgeting (e.g., for resources, equipment, software), planning space and facilities, and standards-compliant digital information management (e.g., archiving, dissemination, and documentation). The position reports to the Dean of SEAS.

UDC seeks motivated individuals to provide expertise and help teach curriculum that spans across advanced manufacturing to cybersecurity, biomedical systems, materials science, and computer architecture. Degree programs within UDC’s SEAS are Biomedical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Science and Information Technology, Electrical Engineering and Computer Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering. Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assists with the daily supervision of the activities and personnel in SEAS laboratories (emphasizing Civil Engineering).
  • Enforce OSHA regulations for all Perry Center laboratory classes and laboratory preparations. Replenishes and maintains inventory of equipment, models, supplies, and safety of operation.
  • Provides support to the faculty and students in all SEAS laboratories (e.g., material testing lab, structural lab, geotechnical lab, hydraulics and thermo lab, concrete lab, civil engineering materials lab, construction methods, environmental modeling, and simulation machine shop).
  • Provides supervision and training to student researchers, co-workers, and teaching assistants to deliver reliable and technically up to date laboratory experiences with safe use of equipment and compliance with applicable safety regulations.
  • Assists with the Human Capital Planning. Interviews, hires, schedules, and supervises work study students, educational aides and part-time, temporary support employees.
  • Supervises and provides support for students' design projects, student chapter competitions, extra-curricular and co-curricular activities, machine-shop operations, advanced manufacturing, and rapid prototyping.
  • Plans, formulates, implements, and manages budgeting for procurements, maintenance and resupply of resources, equipment, instrumentation, and software in the laboratories. Assists in facilities with space planning for the administration of educational and research laboratories
  • Tests machine shop activities. Assist students with lab setup and ensure that service to students is available during the scheduled time of operation.
  • Works with other laboratory technicians, faculty members, and administrators as necessary to produce lab manuals, deliver quality laboratory instructional experiences, and supports the research activities within SEAS in a timely way.
  • Develops and conducts hands-on activities to support student-recruitment and outreach activities and workshops, including generation of promotional material.
  • Maintains the physical condition of laboratories for teaching. Secures supplies, and consumables as necessary.
  • Administers training. Maintains digital documentation and archives all training, procurement, planning, safety rules and requirements, and resource-related activities.
  • Ensures that environmental requirements and safety protocols are met at the federal, state, and local government levels
  • Perform other duties as assigned in SEAS.
Minimum Job Requirements
  • Requires Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or a degree closely related to field of study, PLUS considerable direct knowledge and experience in civil engineering may be acceptable.
  • Master’s degree in Civil Engineering preferred.
  • Minimum 2-3 years of Managerial and/or Program Administration experience related to laboratory operations and direct supervision and training of personnel.
  • Familiarity with a variety of relevant research fields concepts, practices, and procedures.

Residency Preference: A person applying for a position who is a bona fide District resident at the time of application for the position, may be awarded a 10-point residency preference over non-District applicants, unless the person declines the preference points. If selected, the person shall be required to present no less than 8 proofs of bona fide District residency on or before the effective date of the appointment and maintain such residency for 7 consecutive years from the effective date of the appointment. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the 7-year period will result in forfeiture of employment.

Background Investigation: Employment with the University of the District of Columbia is contingent upon a satisfactory background investigation. The determination of a 'satisfactory background investigation' is made at the sole discretion of the University of the District of Columbia.
