Job Summary/Basic Function

An employee in this job performs routine maintenance, inspections, and repairs on HVAC and refrigeration system components according to a prescribed set of instructions. Work involves responding to service calls, conducting assessments, and performing adjustments to equipment to resolve occupant comfort issues. Work is performed according to established guidelines and includes inspecting and replacing faulty or worn parts, such as compressors, condensers, expansion valves, float and service valves, thermostats, belts, fans, fuses, coils, filters, and drive assemblies; and testing equipment functionality upon completion. Work may also include assisting a higher-level trades person or supervisor with more complex maintenance, installations, or repairs. Work is performed independently and is checked upon completion for adherence to guidelines and quality and timeliness standards.

Annual Salary Range: Salary Range: $37,144.00 – $41,917.00 plus comprehensive benefits starting on the first day of employment, including:
  • Health insurance – Low bi-weekly premium. Employees pay 5% of bi-weekly salary for benefit coverage with ability to pay 2.5% when participating in the wellness program.
  • Dental insurance – Coverage is free to employee and dependents after 90 days
  • Vision insurance – Coverage is free to employee and dependents after 90 days.
  • Group life insurance – equal to annual salary (up to $40,000.00) at no cost to the employee
  • Retirement – 2 plans to choose from
  • Tuition waiver – employee, spouse, and dependents are eligible
  • Vacation leave – up to 11 days accrued per year for first 3 years, increases to 19 days per year after 3 years
  • Sick leave – up to 11 days accrued per year, including up to 5 days per year that can be taken to care for a family member
  • Holiday leave – Up to 12 days per calendar year

Required Qualifications
  • Two years of experience in the maintenance, repair, or installation of HVAC or refrigeration systems, units, and equipment; OR Completion of a four year Vo-Tech training program in refrigeration, HVAC, or building automation and six months experience in the maintenance, repair, or installation of HVAC or refrigeration systems, related digitally controlled equipment, or BA systems; OR An equivalent combination of experience and training that includes one year of experience in the maintenance, repair, or installation of HVAC or refrigeration equipment.
  • Knowledge of:
    • mechanical aspects of HVAC and refrigeration equipment and components.
    • electronic and pneumatic controls and functions pertaining to HVAC and refrigeration systems.
    • the use and functionality of Microsoft Office Suite software.
    • knowledge in the care and use of tools and equipment essential to the operation and maintenance of HVAC and refrigeration systems.
  • Ability to:
    • read and interpret HVAC system blueprints, manufacturers manuals, and mechanical equipment schematics.
    • identify the voltage of HVAC and refrigeration equipment.
    • establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Must obtain EPA Universal Refrigerant Transition and Recovery Certification types 1,2, and 3, from an approved provider within 6 months of employment
  • Excellent oral, written, interpersonal communication skills.
  • Evidence of a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Successful interview.
  • Successful completion of three background checks.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior experience working in a union environment.
  • Prior professional work experience in a campus/institutional setting with multiple buildings.

  • This position is represented by a labor union and is subject to the terms and conditions of the AFSCME Collective Bargaining Agreement.
  • This position is essential as defined by the collective bargaining agreement and will be expected to report to work during weather and other emergencies.
  • All employees must possess or obtain an active Universal Refrigerant Transition and Recovery Certificate from an approved provider within six months of employment.
  • Must possess a valid PA driver’s license.
