Career Discovery and Success ( CDS ) leads and supports the University’s strategic goals for student achievement by supporting students’ post-graduation outcomes through a coordinated approach to comprehensive, innovative, and high impact career services across the campus landscape. It is only through our partnerships with our colleges this strategic mission is achieved.

The Career Strategist position is an embedded position developed in partnership with and collaboratively supported by the College of Education and College of Human Sciences to enhance the opportunities for students to engage in career development services and programs, through both direct service delivery to students and consultative support to faculty and staff to integrate career education and competency development in the classroom and co-curricular experiences. As part of the college fabric, an essential component of this position is to build career connections and custom engagement opportunities between students, employers, and alumni with the training and support of the Career Discovery and Success team and in partnership with key college stakeholders.

The Career Strategist serves the college by providing direct support and consultation to students, faculty, and staff. A key focus of this role is to provide coaching and consultation with students regarding career development, job and experiential learning search strategies, expanding the exposure to various types of work experiences and opportunities, connecting students to resources, and supporting student engagement in services, programs, and events hosted by the colleges served, as well as those supported by CDS . This position develops successful partnerships with college departments, faculty, and staff to holistically support student success, and supports the connection of businesses, employers, and alumni to the college and students served within the college.

The Career Strategist may support or collaboratively develop career related course content with faculty or teach career development courses within their academic college. This position will help develop and maintain a supportive referral system and student success team for holistic, wrap-around services with academic advisors and faculty/staff experiential learning personnel. Additionally, the career strategists will facilitate and conduct workshops, class presentations, and support employer engagements and fairs within their academic colleges. As a member of the Career Discovery and Success team this position reports to the Director of University Career Strategy, is a member of the Auburn University Career Consortium, and is provided professional development through consistent supervision, consortium participation, and professional association affiliations. With the Career Strategists being situated within the colleges, consistent communication and feedback from the College of Education and the College of Human Sciences on performance, student needs and outcomes, and support of faculty and staff will be a component of regular supervision meetings, as well as the annual evaluation for the position, and will guide collaborative the annual operational and strategic planning process in collaboration with college leadership.

Essential Functions
  • Serves as a strategist between Career Discovery and Success and the designated academic unit and is responsible for working closely with strategic partners creating a culture of collaboration among a variety of stakeholders.
  • Serves as an advocate for their assigned student populations increasing exposure and access to more diverse employers and employment opportunities.
  • Assists in facilitating, promoting, and expanding interaction with business and industry, government, and non-profit employers to create and increase career-related work experience opportunities, e.g., co-ops, internships, volunteer, and summer employment.
  • Facilitates the integration of career readiness and articulation by working directly with faculty and staff at the college and program level, collaborating and communicating between career services and academic advising.
  • Supports and assists in development, direction, administration, and promotion of university-wide Career Strategist and CDS service programs.
  • Supports student success outcomes and key QEP success factors through career advising and coaching, instruction, and opportunities to scale engagement at the college level while maximizing support around engagement in experiential learning, job search strategies, graduate and professional school preparation, and career competency articulation.
  • Assists in delivering other core Career Center programs including teaching career development courses, career coaching, and employer education related to academic unit and student population.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

Education:
Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited university with at least 18 hours of graduate level coursework completed in Counseling, Higher Education, Social Work, Human Services or related field.

Experience:
4 years of experience in career services or programs to include program development and project management, career assessment instruments, resume-writing, job search correspondence or interviewing, and the summer job and internship search.

Substitutions allowed for Experience:
When a candidate has the required education, but lacks the required experience, they may normally apply additional appropriate education toward the experience requirement, at a rate of one (1) year relevant education per year of required experience.

Minimum Skills, License, and Certifications

Minimum Skills and Abilities

Experience in career services or programs to include program development and project management, career assessment instruments, resume-writing, job search correspondence or interviewing, and the summer job and internship search.

Knowledge of a broad range of career paths and insight related to academic disciplines being served. Knowledge of the application process and materials for industry and graduate/professional schools, as well as knowledge and applicable skill related to career decision-making interventions and career competency development and articulation.
