    SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITY:

    This position reports to the Director of the Thorobred Learning Center and offers academic assistance to individuals, small groups, and classes. The academic support specialist assists students in developing learning techniques. This position is in charge of planning, coordinating, and organizing a variety of Learning Center programs and activities to assist students and help them achieve their educational objectives, as well as coordinating professor, staff, and student use of Learning Center facilities. The responsibilities as an academic support specialist will include leading study groups or workshops, assisting with the peer tutor program, evaluating existing programs, and measuring student learning and academic success.





    ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
  • Provide academic assistance and coaching to students.
  • Provide students with individual and group tutoring, including, but not limited to subject-specific knowledge, study skills, and college success techniques.
  • Collaborate with faculty and staff to create tutorial support and programming that will help students succeed in curricular courses.
  • Plan, create, and implement workshops and programming that enhances learning, offers academic assistance, and enables students to become active, engaged learners.
  • Support learning by discovering, creating, and disseminating helpful, up-to-date print and digital materials for all taught topic areas and centers.
  • Advertise academic support services to instructors and students via classroom visits, campus activities, flyers, emails, and other digital and print mediums.
  • Assist with coordinating faculty requests for course-specific instructional support, including one-on-one referrals, small-group sessions, in-class presentations, and supplemental instruction sessions.
  • Administers, proctors, scores, and communicates test results from the Testing Center. Follows college, state/federal, and testing agency rules and procedures for testing record security/confidentiality; includes FERPA adherence as it applies to the College and testing services.
  • Keep track of Testing Center data such as the number of individuals tested, the number of tests provided, and the kind of tests offered. Prepares monthly and yearly reports and offers program-related suggestions to the supervisor.
  • Pursue professional development opportunities to study and apply learning assistance strategies.
  • Work directly with staff in relevant offices (Registrar, Bursar, Financial Aid, etc.) to help solve students’ progression and registration issues as needed.
  • Work effectively with university advisors to empower students to navigate the institution and accomplish their educational goals.
  • Serve as a resource and information source for students, staff and faculty.
  • Use evidence-based strategies to recommend/implement changes in college processes to improve student success, persistence, and completion rates.
  • Participate in various College committees or working groups directed toward improving learning strategy awareness and student success.
  • Provides academic advising to a designated cohort of students.
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Master’s degree preferred
  • 2+ years’ experience working in Higher Education
  • Study in developmental education desirable
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills
  • Supervisory experience
  • Ability to work nights and weekends




KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES:
  • Superior listening and critical thinking skills and the ability to multi-task.
  • Experience with data collection and reporting.
  • Experience managing, supervising, evaluating and motivating staff.
  • Candidates should have the ability to become knowledgeable of the range of varied student services available, enrollment services, academic policies, requirements, and procedures of Kentucky State University.
  • Strong interpersonal/human relations skills essential.
  • Ability to initiate and maintain professional relationships with diverse groups, demonstrate sensitivity to the needs of a diverse student population including low-income, first-generation, students of color, disabled, underrepresented, older and non-traditional, and international students.
  • Must have excellent verbal and written communication.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality is essential.
  • Must have attention to detail.
  • Basic skills in productivity software (Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, Excel).
  • Ability to collect, analyze and report retention related data.
  • Must be able to multi-task, prioritize, manage multiple priorities, and meet deadlines.
  • Must have the ability to work in a fast-paced environment and possess excellent organizational skills.
  • Ability to interpret and communicate university policies and procedures and associated federal and state regulations.
  • Work staggered hours including evening hours during the work week as assigned.




SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY: This position will have no supervisory responsibility.





PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS :
  • Work is normally performed in a typical interior and/or office work environment.
  • No or very limited physical effort required.
  • No or very limited exposure to physical risk.
