Position Summary:

The Student Support Specialist position is student facing, a first point of contact, within the department of the Accessibility Resource Center, disability supports and services. This position provides direct support and case management services to program participants and serves as a resource for faculty and staff around disability-related topics and issues.

Job Description:

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Education, Rehabilitation Counseling, Computer Science or closely related field.
  • Two or more years working with students with disabilities.
  • Demonstrates strong problem-solving and time management skills.
  • Ability to prioritize workload with multiple demands and frequent interruptions.
  • Strong commitment to customer service and work ethics.
  • Demonstrates effective communication skills both orally and in writing.
  • Knowledge of MAC and PC operating systems
Preferred Qualifications • Bachelor’s degree in Special Education, Rehabilitation Counseling, School Counseling or closely related field.
  • Four or more years working with a diverse population, including adolescents and adults with disabilities.
  • Knowledge and understanding of assistive technology software, voice recognition, alternative format, iPhone, iPad, and related Apps used by individuals with disabilities.
  • Familiarity with assistive technologies and their application in Higher Education.
  • Knowledge of Federal, State and local laws regarding the Americans with Disabilities Act and Amendment Act, especially in Higher Education.
  • Experience in data collecting, managing and creating reports for the Accessibility Resource Center.
  • Demonstrates the ability to think critically and uses good judgement to handle confident/sensitive information with discretion and with students in crisis.
Major Responsibilities
  • Manages all aspects of the front office including answering phones, responding to emails, managing walk-in appointments and visitors.
  • Provides outreach to new student applicants.
  • Schedules and provides intake appointments with new students and through an interactive process and review of supporting documentation, determines eligibility for academic accommodations.
  • Maintains detailed case notes and files on students while Adhering to FERPA and HIPPA practices.
  • Reviews department’s policies and procedures and demonstrates how to request academic accommodations and schedule exams in the testing center.
  • Meets regularly with students as needed and provides “wrap-around” services of support.
  • Provides “warm-hand offs” to other student support programs on campus (i.e. Counseling Center, TRIO, STEM3 or Academic Success Coaches) to address retention issues.
  • Provides outreach to faculty and staff and answer’s disability-related questions.
  • Assists the Accessibility and Resource Coordinator in determining assistive technology options available for students.
  • Assists the Accessibility and Resource Coordinator in training students on technology and software including, but not limited to, screen readers, text enlargers, smart pens, note taking, time management and executive functioning apps.
  • Assist in providing accessible textbooks and materials to students eligible for alternative formats.
  • Reviews literature and discussions posted on list-serve addressing disability-related issues in post-secondary education.
  • Represents the Accessibility Resource Center in various campus wide events including new student orientation and admitted student’s day.
  • Provide proctoring support to students (with accommodations) testing in the testing center and securely manages exams dropped off and delivered as needed.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and student success as well as working with broadly diverse communities
  • Maintains knowledge and awareness of digital accessibility including the American with Disabilities Act and Section 508.
  • Produces and remediates digitally accessible materials in accordance with FLC standards.
  • Perform other duties as assigned

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand and move around the room; talk, hear, and use hands and fingers to operate a computer and telephone equipment.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision requirements due to computer work.
  • Light to moderate lifting is required.
Compensation

The salary range is $40,500 to $45,000, plus a comprehensive benefits package
