Editor and Content Strategist

Salary:

Minimum $60,000 ANNUAL (12 months)
Depending on Qualifications
The typical starting salary for this position is $70,400 - $82,800 depending on qualifications and experience. Exceptional qualifications and experience will be considered in negotiating salary. The full salary range for this position is $58,000 - $107,600. Employees in this position can expect to receive benefits such as generous vacation, holidays, and paid time off; competitive insurances and saving accounts; and retirement benefits.

Job Summary:

The Editor and Content Strategist for the College of Letters & Science's publications will serve as a member of the College's Office of Strategic Communications & Advancement (SCA) and will report to the Office's Assistant Dean. This position is part of a highly-collaborative, energetic, and integrated team.

This colleague will serve as editor and content strategist for the College's publications, including the semiannual Letters & Science alumni magazine (print publication and web microsite), the monthly alumni and friends e-newsletter "Sift & Winnow," and an annual research print edition "Fueling Discovery."

L&S is the largest school or college on the UW-Madison campus, with more than 250,000 alumni, 18,000 undergraduate students (45% of the total campus enrollment), and faculty and staff working in 39 academic departments, professional schools, and programs plus dozens of centers and institutes.

Responsibilities: Provides technical expertise and oversight in areas relating to rights, permissions, and overall content production. Reviews content for completeness, accuracy, and correctness to align with editorial or client objectives.
  • 15% Edits, revises, and proofreads materials and resolves errors or inconsistencies in style, syntax, grammar, and format
  • 40% Plans, develops, creates, and publishes internal and/or external communications
  • 10% Manages production deadlines
  • 15% Provides information and consultative advice about editorial policies, procedures, and services to contributing stakeholders
  • 15% Provides in-depth research and fact-checking for publication and distribution
  • 5% Develops and maintains the style guide, including editorial standards and policies

Education:

Required
Bachelor's Degree in journalism, English, communications or a related field.

Qualifications:

Required:
- A minimum of seven years of professional experience in strategic communications, journalism, marketing, or a closely related professional role is required.
- Demonstrated experience writing for multiple audiences (in higher education, news agency, and/or magazine setting), and creating and producing multi-platform content covering a wide variety of subjects.
- Strong experience creating and following content plans, production schedules, and tight deadlines in collaboration with other content producers.
- An instinct for strong story concepts and the ability to identify, research, and pitch ideas to stakeholders.
- Strong ability to work as a positive, inspired, and collaborative team member with colleagues in the University, College, the College's units, and the Wisconsin Foundation & Alumni Association.
- Demonstrated ability to handle multiple priorities, take initiative, work independently, and self-start.
- Exceptional attention to detail and proofreading skills with demonstrated knowledge of AP Style.

Preferred:
- Ability to navigate a complex academic community, including the ability to build bridges and strong collaborative relationships with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders to achieve objectives and articulate best practices for communications.
- Ability to articulate the value of a liberal arts and sciences education and the College's mission to its many internal and external stakeholders.
- A creative eye to identify engaging visual and imagery concepts for various media.
- Commitment to ongoing learning around diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging and applying that knowledge to the SCA team and mission.
- Knowledge of current issues in higher education and sensitivity to political and social issues.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule to complete time-sensitive projects and to attend occasional evening and/or weekend events, as needed.
- Proficiency with MS Office, Adobe suite.

This position may require some work to be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location. Some work may be performed remotely, at an offsite, non-campus work location.
