Job Description

Reporting to the Director of Engineering Services and the Construction Standards Official, the Mechanical Engineer will serve as a member of the team with a focus on mechanical systems, Maintenance Reserve project management, develop asset management processes and a technical resource for the application of the VT Design Construction Standards Manual.

This position serves as one of the University's representatives for the review and acceptance of Capital, Renovation, and operational projects. In this position the mechanical engineer will work within a diverse team to provide project engineering support through review, research, analysis, design, communication, coordination, and field observation/inspection activities with regards to renewal of building systems. This position will require the use of project management skills to track the phases and tasks of multiple projects, coordinate construction budgets across several internal client groups and track closeout schedules to meet critical funding timelines. This position requires skills to work within a fast paced and diverse team to provide mechanical engineering support to operations and maintenance staff and other departments upon request in addition to providing condition assessment support for the building condition assessment program. The position will have a comprehensive understanding and working knowledge of the VT Maintenance Reserve program and the Design Construction Standards Manual and will be responsible for soliciting input and updating the standards on a routine basis.

Required Qualifications

• B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering, or a Bachelors degree in engineering combined with relevant mechanical engineering industry experience.
• Successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering exam and working toward a PE licensure, with the ability to obtain a Virginia license within 3-4 years.
• Experience in mechanical design, analysis, condition assessment, project engineering, and facilities engineering.
• Thorough knowledge of engineering principles and techniques of engineering planning; usage of equipment and materials used in engineering operations: specialized subjects used in the fields of engineering, such as mathematics, statistics, mechanics, power, physics, and chemistry; and of the strength of materials.
• Ability to apply engineering principles to practical engineering problems and procedures; to use engineering equipment and tools, including computer applications; to make, read and interpret engineering drawings and specifications.
• Ability to handle multiple priorities; manage contracts; analyze problems and negotiate positive solutions; make defensible, unsupervised administrative decisions and recommendations; and provide technical and policy support.
• Experience with major construction work, having onsite experience with contractors, and a basic understanding of building construction.
• Excellent communication and presentation skills with a highly diverse audience including design professionals, contractors, and others. May include preparing reports, analyzing technical issues, break down complex issues etc.
• Work experience with the management of complex capital construction projects, HVAC systems, controls and tracking of project budgets to align with critical project closeout schedules.

Preferred Qualifications

• Engineering operations experience for a large, research institution or other organization with a large number and variety of facilities, including utilities.
• Experience with HVAC system commissioning and controls concepts and strategies.
• Experience with energy-efficient design concepts and sustainable construction strategies.

Additional Information

• Work is performed primarily in an office setting with considerable sitting and use of computer.
• Repetitive motion occurs with keyboarding.
• Statement of Economic Interest is required.
• Typical work hours are Monday Friday from 8 a.m. 5 p.m.
• Must have a valid drivers license and safe driving record.
• After hours and weekend work may be required to meet the needs of the department.
• May be required to travel to meetings throughout the state and to non-Blacksburg sites with some overnight stays.
• As situation dictates must wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
• This position may be issued a mobile communication device (such as radio, cellphone, iPad, iPod, pager, etc.) Devices issued are the responsibility of the employee and are to be returned in satisfactory condition upon separation of employment. Devices are to be used according to supervisor instruction and according to relevant policies.

The successful candidate will be required to have a criminal conviction check.
