The Johns Hopkins University is seeking anOperations Manager, Basic Science. In this position, the employee is responsible for the oversight and preparation of all facilities projects to include renovation, repair and space reallocation for the Basic Science departments. Work with Design and Construction, Engineers, Contractors, Maintenance and Housekeeping teams to ensure projects are completed in scope, on budget and on time to the Department’s specifications. Provides guidance and expertise to faculty and administrators for space needs, footprint expansion, etc.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities




Project Management

Responsible for coordinating with D&C on project finalized scope of work statements, project estimates and schedules and provide local oversight to contractor activities, report back to Design & Construction on any necessary change orders:




  • Along with department directors and administrator coordinate oversite of the square footage of JHU basic science space.
  • Review all project prior to submission to the Business Office and Design & Construction.
  • First point of contact for projects vetted through Design & Construction.
  • Provide space utilization recommendations to Administrators, and Chairs.
  • Manage the DOM Archibus space databases for basic sciences.
  • Work with JHH maintenance teams to ensure that all HVAC, plumbing, electrical and mechanical issues are maintained promptly for basic science space.
  • Leads efforts to ensure contracted services scopes of work are up to date. Reports deficiencies to the facilities management group for appropriate action.
  • Collaborates with the VP of Facilities and department Directors to coordinate the short- and long-term range facility improvement goals.
Space Allocation



Primary Point of Contact for administrators for any space or equipment projects/concerns:




  • Review architectural drawings & furniture layouts and proposals – Ensure that all the tenants’ specified requirements are captured in the drawings and proposals. Propose modifications if needed.
  • Assist in evaluating departments’ current space assignments and suggest alternative options as space density increases to accommodate increase in staff within original footprints of space.
  • Along with chairs, negotiate for space due to expansion needs, relocation of programs, new Directors, building closures, etc.
  • Survey existing project areas, operations, systems, equipment, furniture and other components of the space/facility.

Work Directly with Contractors in non-Hopkins Buildings

  • Contract services for work needed in non-Hopkins buildings to obtain pricing, manage contractor SOW and oversee work to ensure work is done to specifications (includes HVAC, plumbing, flooring, furniture, structural changes, painting, etc.)

Recommend Space Consolidation Efforts

  • Evaluate current space utilization and develop new space allocation based on current needs of faculty/staff.
  • Work with faculty/staff on consolidating equipment & supplies and discard unneeded and/or outdated equipment.
  • Ensure all science needs are met for research.
Responsible for Overseeing the Setting up & Closing Down of Areas (labs, inpatient & outpatient areas, etc.)





  • Work with Safety, Chemical Pick-up, Maintenance, Movers & PI’s to discard all unwanted materials in a specified area.
  • Work with D&C to prepare area for new tenant by patching, painting, modifying, cleaning & inspecting the space.

Work in Partnership with the Project Managers for JHH Facilities, Housekeeping, Design & Construction Teams

  • Provide guidance to leaders throughout projects to completion; collaborate with departments to determine scope of work, review with D&C, analyze project quote to ensure it is within budgetary limits and negotiate with departments how to minimize cost but maintain requested end result.
  • Provide guidance to departments and insight as to how to maximize their space for functionality and aesthetics as well as keeping it within budget constraints.
Emergency/Crisis Response

Work with basic science administrators to maintain and update business continuity plans and research crisis/incident management for the basic sciences:

  • Work directly with Sr. Director of Emergency Management to provide current Inventory of research space and plan provisions for lab space, animals, equipment & science in the event of a disaster.
  • Provide alternatives and back-up solutions for outages that would affect freezers and animals.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel; database and spreadsheet knowledge.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Detail oriented and excellent organizational and time management skills required.
  • Excellent troubleshooting skills.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree required. Additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
  • Five years of related experience.
  • Ability to work effectively with internal and external contacts.
  • Ability to work with a diverse group of people at all levels in the organization.

  • Position requires flexibility. Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks, self-motivated, strong interpersonal skills.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.
