Position Announcement:
The Department of Modern Languages, Literatures, and Cultural Studies at the University of Central Oklahoma seeks to appoint a full-time, non-tenure-track Visiting Assistant Professor of Spanish who is a generalist. The department would be interested in candidates with backgrounds in online education.

Position Overview:
Teaches, advises and mentors students, evaluates student performance, and maintains department and student records in accordance with university policies. Adheres to the educational philosophy of the university. Works in a collaborative manner with colleagues and professional peers. Participates in university meetings that relate specifically to faculty. Serves on department, college, and university committees as requested. Prepares departmental reports as requested. Engages in teaching, service, and scholarly and/or creative activities as defined by the tenure and promotion policy in the UCO Employee and Faculty Handbook. Teaching, research, departmental/school and university service is expected. This position is a full-time, visiting, non-tenure-track position.

College/Department Overview:
The Department of Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultural Studies promotes the study and teaching of second languages and the study of the literatures and cultures produced by the peoples of those languages. In addition to major programs in French, German, and Spanish, the department offers courses in Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Latin, and Biblical Greek.

The department supports the training of future language teachers and fosters the learning of Spanish in various settings (common education, non-traditional learning, and higher education). Assessment of student progress and academic programs are part of our culture. Academic programs are evaluated and developed after shared work in strategic planning and coordination of multiple section courses. The department also sponsors community events and clubs. There are opportunities for leading study tours and mentoring study abroad by undergraduates.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The successful candidate will be expected to teach a 4:3 load that includes elementary-level language courses in addition to upper-level courses in language, literature, and cultural studies that complement instructor expertise and departmental need. Duties include teaching day/evening courses in a face-to-face format and online courses as needed.

The successful candidate will be able to teach across a range of courses in and about the Spanish language, literatures expressed in this language, and cultural surveys and topics related to Spain and Latin America.

Other duties include engaging in service at the department, college, and university levels; and maintaining an active program of research, scholarly, and/or creative activity.

Minimum Qualifications:
Doctorate in Spanish, Spanish Literature, or Spanish Language and Literature in hand by start of appointment so applicants should already have the PhD or be ABD with a defense date by July 2023. The successful candidate is a generalist with interest in areas of literature and cultural studies . All applicants must have experience teaching Spanish at the college level. Native or near-native proficiency in Spanish. Competence in teaching another language is desirable, but not necessarily preferred.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
We seek a candidate who is fluent in Spanish, a capable teacher, scholar, and member of the University community. The successful candidate can work with students through several levels of linguistic proficiency, academic acculturation, and professional, academic, or civic ambitions.

Experience Required:
Teaching, research, departmental/school and university service is expected. An earned doctorate degree awarded by a regionally accredited or internationally recognized institution in the field specified in the position announcement (exceptions require Academic Affairs approval). **NOTE** If the doctorate is not obtained and submitted by the time of employment, the position rank will change to TT-Instructor.
