Associate Director of Research Communication (Part-Time)
The Opportunity

The Associate Director of Research Communication is responsible for promoting and advancing the university’s research and innovation enterprises. Based on priorities set by the Vice President for Research and Technology Transfer (RTT), this position will design communication strategies and produce written and visual media in support of research at Mines, including the development of new partnerships within and external to the university, and the advancement of new initiatives. This position will also be responsible for promoting our faculty’s research accomplishments to a diverse, broad audience through a variety of formats, both in technical content for the RTT and our future research institute websites in coordination with staff in Communications & Marketing.

This position will collaborate with RTT, Mines’ communications office, departments, research centers and our future institutes to produce new content, highlight achievements in the research enterprise, support research and innovation communications, prepare and update research stories and press releases, social media communication and marketing materials.

This position will report to the VPRTT. This is a part-time role at .5 FTE.

Responsibilities
  • Translate technical research to easily understood stories for a variety of technical and non-technical audiences that demonstrate Mines impact for press release and/or for the RTT website and Mines newsroom.
  • Update and maintain social media communications, LinkedIn, Twitter, etc.
  • Develop internal marketing strategy to promote research within Mines.
  • Facilitate public-facing outreach projects related to research and innovation. Support planning and delivery of communications to external audiences.
  • Develop and execute project-specific communication plans.
  • Develop and maintain the content for RTT website including collaboration with technical experts.
  • Develop and maintain an archive of researcher profiles for RTT website compatible with search capabilities.
  • Ensure consistency in messaging to internal and external audiences.
  • Development of outreach strategies and related materials/messaging to enhance the visibility and impact of Mines' research.
  • Manage day-to-day research communication both internal and external to Mines.
  • Facilitate meetings with RTT, Deans, Department Heads, Executive Team and other internal stakeholders to further develop Mines Research the messaging and priorities for the research Institutes.
  • Work with Mines researchers to survey research across campus and ensure that research is represented within the Institute structure with external visibility.
  • Work closely with marketing and communications team ensuring seamless communication between research and campus

Minimum Qualifications
  • PhD in a relevant science or engineering field, and at least 3 years of research experience
  • 5 or more years in a technical writing capacity
  • Demonstrated experience in science writing for a variety of audiences (both technical and non-technical)
  • Demonstrated experience working with stakeholders and collaborators across research and academia.
  • Demonstrated science outreach experience.
  • Experience performing and presenting their own research to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Skills relevant to website editing, maintenance, and development, including working with WordPress
  • Ability to communicate to a scientific community
  • Ability to translate complex research into easily understandable stories for a broad audience
  • Ability to develop science communication and outreach strategies and content
  • Skill developing and maintaining relationships and collaborations
  • Ability to speak with a variety of stakeholders and audiences

Pay Range

$106,000 - $115,000 at full time

Mines takes into consideration a combination of candidate’s education, training and experience as well as the position’s scope and complexity, the discretion and latitude required in the role, work location, and external market and internal value when determining a salary level for potential new employees.
