Assistant Professor (Surgery and Bioengineering), [Non-Tenure Track]

POSITION SUMMARY

Location: Department of Surgery at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, Baltimore, Maryland

The University of Maryland School of Medicine is conducting an open search for an Assistant Professor in Surgical Research and Bioengineering in the Department of Surgery. The successful candidate will primarily conduct computational and experimental research in the UMB Artificial Organ lab, with a specific emphasis on the development of cardiopulmonary support systems. The candidate should have expertise in one or more of the following areas: Computational fluid dynamics (CFD), blood pump and centrifugal pump, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), ventricular assist device (VAD), mechanical shear-induced blood damage, modeling and simulation, and computer-aided design (CAD). The research interests of the candidate should be aligned with the current strategic areas of expansion in the department.

The position is a full-time, appointment based at the Baltimore, Maryland Campus. This position requires scholarly activity, teaching, service to the school, campus and the profession, and the ability to engage in the application of CFD-based computational design and in-vitro& in-vivo experimental approaches to research studies.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

· Design and develop the next generation artificial heart/lung systems.

· Develop numerical tools and models to assess the potential for blood damage in various cardiopulmonary support systems.

· Conduct and oversee in-vitro and in-vivo experimental approaches.

· Ensure validity and accuracy of data and compliance with quality control requirements.

· Design research projects, analyze findings, develop conclusions, write reports, prepare presentations of relevant findings and conclusions.

· Perform required data extraction and report on progress of programs, studies, and/or projects.

· Summarize and prepare manuscripts, presentations, and proposals by providing and presenting relevant data.

· Develop and formulate best practices and protocols in data collection, analysis, and reporting.

· Perform additional duties as assigned.

Participation in instruction in the candidate’s area of expertise.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Ph.D. in an appropriate discipline and postdoctoral experience. Experience with biomedical device is required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

· Ability to design experimental approaches, research studies, collection procedures and data analysis.

· Proficient in computational fluid dynamics techniques, including finite volume method, finite element method, and finite difference method. Able to use and adapt these methods in commercial software or through self-coding.

· Knowledge of medical device design principles associated with blood delivery and blood gas exchange.

· Ability to understand and utilize scientific/medical/engineering terminology and research theory in both oral and written communications.

· Knowledge of theoretical, conceptual and writing support on research analysis and findings.

· Excellent communication, organizational, and project management skills.

· Ability to work as part of a team and independently perform or lead research activities.
