CONTEXT OF THE JOB:

The Community Engagement Initiative (CEI) was established in February 2016 to further strengthen UD’s identity as an engaged research university. The Initiative focuses on what makes every community strong: improving public education, community health, and environmental quality; encouraging economic development and social equity; and expanding arts and cultural programs that enrich quality of life.

Working as a member of CEI involves supporting the priorities of the UD Civic Action Plan, including partnerships, student programs, faculty development, capacity building, and promoting civic engagement at all levels, local to global. Members of the CEI team work collaboratively on programs that cut across these priorities. The incumbent will support projects for CEI, including the Partnership for Arts and Culture, the Council of Community Engagement, and the Carnegie Engagement Reclassification process. The incumbent will coordinate community engagement communications and serve as the primary liaison on communications with the Office of Communications and Marketing (OCM).

MAJOR RESPONSIBLITIES:

Reporting to the Communications Specialist II (Provost Office) in the Office of Communications and Marketing, the Communications Specialist I responsibilities will include the following:

Works with the Office of Communications and Marketing (OCM) to support implementation of community engagement communications strategies.

  • Develops communications products for CEI and its partnerships, including website maintenance, social media strategy, print material support and editorial support.
  • Produces a monthly Engagement Report; Partnership newsletters and assists in the production of the Annual Report.
  • Provide promotional support for the Council of Community Engagement monthly meetings and participate in the planning meetings with co-chairs.
  • Supports the development, marketing and execution of events hosted by CEI including but not limited to the Southern Delaware Forum, special speaker series, and the annual Provost Symposium.
  • Assists the CEI team with the overall coordination of CEI programs and the development of and implementation of the University’s Civic Action Plan.
  • Performs other communications job-related tasks as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree and three years related job-related work experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Degree or certificates in communication, marketing, public policy, public administration, or a related field preferred.
  • Effective communication, interpersonal, and formal presentation skills. Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to interact effectively and diplomatically with a wide range of individuals both within and outside the organization.
  • Ability to provide direction in the promotion, production, and marketing of events.
  • Experience with communications tools such as web content management systems (i.e., WordPress), electronic newsletters and email marketing platforms, Google Suite, and Office. Experience with design software and/or database management a plus.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks concurrently and effectively prioritize among competing needs. Skill in organizing resources and establishing and adjusting priorities in a dynamic environment.
  • Must be pro-active, energetic, adaptive, a team-player, efficient, and willing to learn new skills.
  • Ability to interpret, adapt and apply guidelines and procedures. Knowledge of University policies preferred. Ability to adhere to University Brand Guides as well as policies and procedures governing digital media.
