West Shore Community College seeks an individual who is passionate about teaching in a rural EMS program with a desire to build strong relationships with students, colleagues, and agencies in the College’s service area.  This full-time EMS Faculty member (with potential for continuing appointment and full professor rank) will begin Fall Semester, August 23, 2023. The successful candidate will be a collaborative, student-centered individual who has excellent content knowledge and is able to teach a variety of EMS courses.

This position will support program functions by providing didactic, and psychomotor instruction, clinical data, and documentation services; and also work to maintain program compliance with accreditation standards according to State of Michigan and CoAEMSP. This position will be responsible for supporting student success by creating an optimum learning environment, responding to student needs, managing effective instructional activities, modeling employability skills, demonstrating professionalism, developing cooperative work relationships with other faculty and staff, supporting college administrative requirements, and maintaining competency in their instructional field.

Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following

  • Teach a full-time course load in EMS.
  • Organize content of curriculum in the classroom, laboratory, and clinical settings. Assignments may include weekend hours.
  • Apply knowledge of a variety of appropriate instructional strategies and modalities, as well as technology, to the successful presentation of content as to aid in the students’ mastery of it.
  • Maintain knowledge of and full compliance with all accreditation requirements for all licensing agencies, the State of Michigan, and any federal level requirements.
  • Participate in planning, curricular review, and assessment; participate in and develop programs to measure student performance.
  • Promote and coordinate internships/apprenticeships/clinicals within EMS including the orientation, training, and supervision of clinical and field internship preceptors.
  • Maintain a liaison with the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP), the Committee on Accreditation for the EMS Professions (CoAEMSP), and multiple fire, emergency services, and public safety agencies at the local, state, and federal level.
  • Complete and submit to the program director all reporting documents required of the college by local/state/federal agencies.
  • Participate in professional development and maintain awareness of new trends and developments in the area(s) of EMS, curriculum, and instruction.
  • Meet other contractual obligations as defined in the West Shore Community College Instructional Agreement.

Required Qualifications

  • Michigan licensed Paramedic
  • Current Instructor Coordinator license with the State of Michigan
  • Bachelor’s degree, or the ability to obtain within four years, in a related field and three years (6000 hours) of non-teaching work experience with a licensed life support agency OR  Associate’s degree, or the ability to obtain in two years, in a related field and additional alternative credentialing equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree.  Alternative credentialing is a combination of education, training, and tested experience. This must include a minimum of three years (6000 hours) of non-teaching work experience with a licensed life support agency.
  • Instructional experience
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work and build positive relationships with community members, healthcare professionals, students, faculty and administration.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

Compensation

Salary range $44,998 – $94,345 (9-month contract) and is commensurate with skills/education/experience.
