Job Summary:

UW Clinical Trials Institute is a partnership between the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health (SMPH) and UW Health. It supports clinical research professionals, investigators and participants to advance discovery and research in the prevention, detection, and treatment of disease to help improve the health of individuals, families, and communities across Wisconsin and beyond. Our exceptionally talented workforce provides care, support, and provide information to clinical trials participants; resources, training, and guidance to research professionals; and opportunities for industry partners to advance groundbreaking medical research.

Responsible for UW Clinical Trials Institute finances and oversight of research budgeting and contracting and management for personnel in these teams. This position reviews, analyzes, and prioritizes requests for financial resources in multiple functional areas in support of efficient day-to-day operations of the clinical trials institute. Assists in directing the development of the annual budget by managing personnel and planning, scheduling, and guiding the work of financial staff. Directs staff on the development of research budgets and contracting with industry sponsors, including process improvement work with staff inside and outside of institute. Leads process improvement initiatives related to clinical trials finance. Supports the mission and vision of the UW Clinical Trials Institute as a member of the leadership team.

Responsibilities: Reviews, analyzes, and prioritizes requests for financial resources in multiple functional areas in support of efficient day-to-day operations of the department or business unit. Assists in directing the development of the annual budget by managing personnel and planning, scheduling, and guiding the work of financial staff. Reviews department work for compliance with reporting regulations, develops audit schemes, and recommends and implements fiscal policies to provide for compliant, accurate, and timely reporting within the department or business unit.
  • 25% Plans, schedules and directs financial operations, budgets, allocations and compensation plans for a specific fiscal work unit
  • 5% Implements the unit personnel resource allocation plan including hiring, training, supervision, and resolution of personnel issues
  • 20% Recommends, interprets, disseminates and implements unit-focused fiscal policies and procedures, ensuring compliance with established rules, regulations and financial guidelines
  • 15% Participates in the development, maintenance, and monitoring of automated financial information systems and accounts and ledgers for multiple functional areas
  • 5% Directs the solicitation, review, and awarding of funds from grant programs and integrated research projects occasionally
  • 10% Exercises supervisory authority, including hiring, transferring, suspending, promoting, managing conduct and performance, discharging, assigning, rewarding, disciplining, and/or approving hours worked of at least 2.0 full-time equivalent (FTE) employees
  • 10% Oversees industry-sponsor budgeting and contracting functions within the UW CTI; ensuring efficient turnaround and adequate funding for clinical trials activities
  • 10% Leads process improvement initiatives for the organization related to clinical trials finance.

Qualifications:

Required:
- Excellent time management skills. Ability to work independently or collaborative, manage multiple projects despite interruptions, while closely tracking details and looking for ways to improve processes.
- Minimum 2 years experience with clinical trials finance and budgeting

Preferred:
- Experience with industry budget negotiation
- Experience in an academic health system
- Experience with research billing compliance
- Financial leadership or management experience.

This position may require some work to be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location. Some work may be performed remotely, at an offsite, non-campus work location.
