Career Development at UNC-CH

Through Carolina’s centralized career development resources in University Career Services (UCS) we provide personalized and innovative career education to empower student success and transformation for undergraduate, graduate and professional students. Services include individual career advising and life design coaching, career awareness courses, internship and employment search assistance, workshops on job-seeking skills, on-campus interviewing, graduate school preparation assistance, online internship and job listings and occupational and employer information. Staff work with current and potential employers of UNC students and assist graduate and professional students to identify and pursue part-time jobs, internships, and full-time employment. Additional opportunities for sustained alumni and student mentoring connections have been created with the launch of the People Grove platform, which is licensed and managed through UCS. UCS includes a staff of more than 20 full-time and part-time professionals, undergraduate Career Peers, Graduate Student Advisors, and student employees. The Wendy P. and Dean E. Painter, Jr. Career Center in Hanes Hall includes include counselor offices, interview rooms, and two multipurpose, high-tech presentation rooms. In addition, UCS collaborates with Academic Advising to offer services in the Hardin Hub for Career and Academic Advising located on the South campus. 

In addition to UCS, Carolina boasts a number of career services resources across its schools and academic centers, which work in partnership to offer comprehensive and integrated career development offerings to our students and a holistic approach to students’ academic and career/post-graduate advising experience.

Position Description

UNC-Chapel Hill seeks an experienced and energetic, learner-focused and student-centered, and innovative leader who will frame and implement a best-in-class career development experience for our Carolina students. Reporting to the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Career Development and Executive Director of University Career Services will provide senior-level strategic leadership and frame and implement a vision for all Carolina students’ career growth and development. The AVC/ED will assist undergraduate students with developing career/post-graduation success plans grounded in life-design principles, considering self-awareness, career exploration, experiential learning and high impact experiences, in addition to engaging in industry and graduate school exploration and pursuing part-time jobs, internships, and employment.

The Assistant Vice Chancellor/Executive Director will lead a team of approximately 20 full-time and part-time professionals in the University Career Center, including undergraduate Career Peers, Graduate Student Advisors, and student employees. Additionally, the AVC/ED will have a shared, “dotted line” supervisory relationship with career professionals in the UNC schools and centers, as well as Alumni Affairs, and other career-focused partners across the University. 

The AVC/ED will be responsible for:

  • Framing and implementing an institutional strategy for to students’ career development and post-graduation preparedness, collaborating with widespread campus partners, connecting the work of the centralized UCS team and the resources that are decentralized within our schools and centers; in framing the institutional strategy, consider and name, scope, and identity of UCS and how to best brand and communicate the department and its work
  • Communicating with employers to maintain and expand excellent employer relations and encourage the recruitment and hiring of UNC students
  • Collaborating with Academic Deans and school/center partners, keeping them abreast of the employment data and usage of the Career Center by their students; supporting the Carolina Career Community (C3) professional development initiatives for career services professionals across the university
  • Assessing student learning outcomes and using data-guided decision-making to inform institutional strategy
  • Identifying employer and job market trends and sharing this information widely with campus constituents
  • Managing all UCS operations, including supervision of full-time staff, budget management, fundraising strategies, People Grove operations, and facility management of all UCS allocated spaces
  • In close partnership with the deans and other academic senior leaders, co-supervising the career development staff leaders in UNC-CH schools and centers throughout campus to ensure a consistent and comprehensive career development strategy for the institution

As a department head in Student Affairs, the Assistant Vice Chancellor/Executive Director participates in goal-setting and strategic planning at institutional, divisional, and departmental level, serving on the Student Affairs Leadership Team.

30% Foster Student Learning and Success

  • Sustain a culture of innovation and foster the success of UCS and school/center-based career partners in employer relations, career coaching, and students’ experiential learning
  • Work collaboratively with academic and student success partners across the University to develop and deliver nationally comparable best practices
  • Communicate with Academic Deans and career colleagues in the schools/centers regarding employment data and usage of University Career Services by their students
  • Support the Carolina Career Community (C3) professional development initiatives for career services professionals across the university
  • Encourage early utilization of UCS services by undergraduate students using a Four Steps to Career Success model
  • Develop and expand programs and services for graduate students
  • Develop customized services to meet the unique career interests and needs of students across all broad market sectors, including those aligned with non-profit, emerging opportunities, and entrepreneurial endeavors
  • Collaborate with Academic Advising and other academic services departments to create an integrated, seamless advising experience for students.

25% Develop and Expand Outreach Initiatives

  • Maintain a keen focus on external relations with the goal of continually expanding relationships with, and engagement of, alumni, parents, and employers to support the professional development, experiential learning opportunities, recruitment, and hiring of UNC students in key national and global destinations
  • Communicate with employers to maintain and expand excellent employer relations and encourage the recruitment and hiring of UNC students
  • Communicate with parents, students, employers, and faculty to share employer and job market trends, student engagement with UCS, student destination survey results, along with employer commitments to diversity, equity and inclusion

20% Guide Assessment and Strategic Planning

  • Evaluate the technological demands and opportunities for UCS to enhance customer service, data management, and assessment
  • Oversee the development and evaluation of student learning outcomes, the First Destination Survey Report, and other measures of activity and success, including disaggregating data to determine if all students are accessing and experiencing the services and programs in UCS in an inclusive and equitable manner
  • Use data driven decision making to evaluate and plan for development, enhancements, program elimination, and the reallocation of resources
  • Lead strategic planning efforts in the establishment of short and long-term goals

15% Supervise and Develop Staff

  • Recruit and retain a diverse, academically, and experientially well-prepared staff
  • Demonstrate core values of consistency, inclusion and equity in staff support and development
  • Foster respect for staff and an equitable work climate
  • Foster a learning environment for staff personal and professional development for all members of UCS staff

10% Manage Departmental Operations

  • Develop and manage UCS budget, including JLD programs and gift accounts
  • Coordinate, propose, and manage student fees and career fair receipts
  • Oversee management of UCS facility including contact with services such as housekeeping and maintenance
  • Oversee the operation and management of People Grove for the University
  • Plan for future space as needed
  • Develop and implement a diversified development strategy in collaboration with the Director of Student Affairs Development
  • Ensure UCS operations reflect a high quality of service
  • Ensure UCS meets NACE professional standards
  • Actively participate in national professional associations and scholarly activities

Educational Requirements

Master’s Degree in student personnel/higher education administration, counseling, business, or related field.

Experience

Minimum of eight years of progressive experience in a college career services office or similar management related experience in the field of career development, student development, competency development and experiential learning, and/or corporate relations/corporate recruiting.

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated leadership experience and the ability to frame and implement policy and practice with a high degree of autonomy
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with career development theory, techniques, and interest assessment tools
  • Experience delivering programs to students, parents, and employers
  • Experience managing staff and budgets, as well as developing collaborative partnerships across diverse and complex professional environments
  • Employer relations and development experience
  • Knowledge of, and experience with, data driven program assessment
  • Demonstrated commitment to the highest ethical standards of professional practice as well as personal and professional integrity
  • Exceptional communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills
  • Understanding of, and commitment to, diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility in the planning and delivery of programs and services
  • Utilization of technology in the delivery of student programs

Preferred Qualifications

  • Maintains active membership in career-related professional association(s)
  • Possesses an entrepreneurial, creative, and innovative style that engages others in the spirit of partnership
  • Experience at mid-sized to large higher education institutions
