Job Summary

Under the supervision of the Associate Director of Residential Student Development, the Residential Life Coordinator (RLC) is a live-in professional who oversees all the daily operations and leadership of their assigned residential community. The incumbent's responsibility includes but is not limited to the following areas: lead Graduate Residential Life Coordinators (GRLCs), Resident Assistants (RAs), and Student Assistants (SAs), case coordination centering around student behavior, residential curriculum and community development, and administrative components. The RLC participates in departmental initiatives and leads or serves on committees as needed. The incumbent assists in the overall development and implementation of the Residential Life and Student Housing programs including the coordination of the residential life staff, programs, services, and facilities of the program. The incumbent is required to live in on-campus in university-provided accommodations so that emergency response requirements can be met effectively and promptly. Incumbent is encouraged to eat meals with students in university dining facilities. Furthermore, the incumbent provides services that are equitable, inclusive, and culturally sensitive to enhance the quality of campus life. This position uses a student centered and equity minded approach in all communication and service efforts.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Excellent knowledge of English grammar, business writing, punctuation, and spelling. Ability to compose and appropriately format correspondence and reports.

  • Knowledge of practices, procedures and activities related to student Residential Life programs.

  • Demonstrated experience with planning, developing, and conducting training seminars, workshops, and retreats.

  • Demonstrated experience with selection and training of student staff, particularly in a Housing and Residential Life environment.

  • Demonstrated counseling skills, particularly in student development, conflict resolution, and group dynamics.

  • Ability to assess needs quickly and effectively and intervene in student behavioral and crisis scenarios involving physical and/or emotional risk.

  • General knowledge of personal and social problems typically encountered by college students.

  • Ability to advise students individually or in groups on routine matters, and general knowledge of principles of individual and group behavior.

  • Ability to collect, compile, analyze, and evaluate factual data and make oral or written presentations based on these data.

  • Exhibition of a high degree of initiative and ability to work independently in complex situations, and of creativity, originality, and innovation in the development of training and orientation programs.

  • Ability to perform accurately in a detail-oriented environment, and to handle multiple work priorities, organize and plan work and projects.

  • Ability to develop accurate budget projections and monitor expenses.

  • Ability to quickly learn and apply a variety of state, federal, CSU, and CSULB policies and procedures.

  • Understanding of confidentiality standards related to FERPA and Title IX.

  • Must live on campus in university-provided accommodations so that emergency response requirements can be effectively and promptly fulfilled.

    Education and Experience

  • Equivalent to a bachelor's degree in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration, or a job-related field and two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas required.

  • Master's degree in Student Development, Higher Education, Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or a directly related field preferred.

  • Two years of experience with Residence Hall Management.

  • Minimum one year experience supervising Resident Assistants (RAs) or other University student workers preferred.

  • Minimum of one year experience in counseling, advising, and programming for college-level students preferred.
    Licenses / Certificates

    A valid driver's license is required for this position. Once hired the employee must successfully complete the Defensive Driver Training Program provided by the State of California for California State University campuses.

    Compensation

    Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department's fiscal resources.

    Hiring Range: $4,610 - $5,000 per month commensurate with candidate's education, experience, skills, and training

    CSU Classification Salary Range: $4,610 - $6,556 per month

    Time Base

    Full-time temporary position for one (1) year with no permanent status granted. Temporary assignments may expire prior to the ending date.

    Additional Information
