Special Information

  • This position is an on-site position which requires the incumbent to complete their work primarily at an NAU site, campus, or facility with or without accommodation. Opportunities for remote work are rare. The successful candidate will be required to work 7:30am to 4:30pm - Monday through Friday.
  • Employees of Facility Services are considered essential staff and must report to work when the university is closed for emergencies. This position is required to participate in on-call, call back duties and snow removal, which can include days, nights, weekends, and holidays. Under established circumstances will respond to emergency dispatch calls within set timeframes Administrative or Campus Living buildings.
  • The majority of the work is performed indoors in a shop setting. There will be some travel to worksites to pick up or drop off equipment, train employees on specialized equipment, and troubleshoot equipment issues.
  • Working conditions include but are not limited to: restricted movement, dirty environments, lifting and moving heavy objects.
  • Travel between campus locations is a regular part of the position. Arizona Administrative Code Fleet Safety Policy requires all employees who drive, on university business to pass an online defensive driving course and submit their driver's license number for periodic records review. The law affects all faculty, staff and students who drive any university-owned motorized vehicles. For more information on NAU Authorized Driver Policy


Job Description

The Specialized Equipment Mechanic, Senior:
  • Repairs and maintains the university's grounds equipment to ensure orderly operation without disruption to university functions.
  • Monitors and maintains records of equipment inventory and information and prepares reports with information related to university grounds equipment and plans to be used for recommendations.
  • Answers questions and resolves issues related to university grounds equipment.

This position:
  • Promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.
  • Complies with all job-specific safety requirements and procedures identified in hazard assessments.
  • Proactively participates in accident prevention efforts and responds to injuries and accidents promptly to modify activities and prevent further accidents.
  • Observes and performs all tasks within established guidelines and instructions; adheres to and demonstrates all safety rules and procedures as it relates to chemical, electrical, and mechanical safety regulations.

University employees are responsible for maintaining the highest ethical standards of conduct and are expected to practice integrity, trustworthiness, respect, stewardship, compliance, confidentiality, professionalism and respect to maintain a safe and trusting environment.

Preventative Maintenance and Repairs - 75%

Inspects, diagnoses, repairs, cleans, installs, and performs preventive maintenance for grounds equipment, such as:
  • Bobcats
  • Gators
  • riding lawnmowers
  • push mowers
  • weed eaters
  • chainsaws
  • hedge trimmers
  • hand tools
  • gas, diesel
  • mixed fuel
  • electric small engines
  • hydraulic systems on bobcats
  • snowplows,
  • spreaders
  • snow blowers
  • plow attachments
  • plow blades
  • spreaders into the beds of trucks
  • light replacement
  • other grounds equipment as assigned
  • Repairs and replaces tires on equipment.
  • Coordinates large repairs with NAU Fleet Services or contractor.
  • Operates diagnostic electronic equipment for troubleshooting electrical problems.
  • Pick up and delivery of grounds equipment to perform work.
  • Complete assigned work orders.

Record Keeping and Inventory - 10%
  • Monitors and maintains grounds equipment inventory on computer using a maintenance tracking system.
  • Monitors, maintains, purchases and orders equipment replacement parts inventory and requisitions replacement parts.
  • Writes basic reports and communications to provide information.
  • Organizes and maintains equipment owners' manuals
  • Organizes appropriate documentation to ensure mechanical work complies with university policies.

Customer Service - 5%
  • Provide superior customer service to the campus community.
  • Responsible for initiating measures to improve customer service within the area, LOS Services, and Facility Services.
  • Takes a proactive role in promoting and supporting Facility Services mission and vision.
  • Receives and responds to inquiries from campus members regarding NAU grounds equipment and mechanical policies.

Employee Training and Development - 5%
  • Provides technical direction to grounds crews on proper and safe use of equipment.
  • Participates in job related training.

Other - 5%
  • Makes recommendations to management for new equipment purchases.
  • Removes snow and ice from walkways, parking lots, etc. using shovels and/or snow-blower.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma.
  • 1-3 years of relevant experience.
  • Possession of a current Arizona Type D driver's license.
  • Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Associates Degree.
  • 2+ years of relevant experience.
  • Welding and/or fabrication experience.

Knowledge
  • Advanced knowledge of university specialized equipment maintenance and relevant policies.
  • Knowledge in the electrical repair and maintenance of power, switching, and circuit boards on specialized equipment.
  • Knowledge of mechanical work including engine maintenance and repair.
  • Demonstrates working knowledge of routine work processes and tools required for equipment preventative maintenance and repair.

Background Information

This position has been identified as a safety/security sensitive position. Therefore, per AZ Revised Statute, Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, employment history investigation, degree verification (in some cases) and fingerprinting. Finally, each year Northern Arizona University releases an Annual Security Report. The report is a result of a federal law known as the Clery Act. The report includes Clery reportable crime statistics for the three most recent completed calendar years and discloses procedures, practices and programs NAU uses to keep students and employees safe including how to report crimes or other emergencies occurring on campus. In addition, the Fire Safety Report is combined with the Annual Security Report for the NAU Flagstaff Mountain Campus as this campus has on-campus student housing. This report discloses fire safety policies and procedures related to on-campus student housing and statistics for fires that occurred in those facilities. Salary

Anticipated salary range is $37,584 - $45,023. Annual salary commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.

FLSA Status

This position is non-exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). The incumbent is eligible for overtime pay or compensatory time according to University policy. Further, the employee must submit timesheets that accurately reflect all hours worked.

This is a Classified Staff (CLS) position. Employees will have 31 days from their start date to enroll in benefits.
