Brief Summary of Work for this Position

The Director of Compensation leads a team of compensation professionals to develop, implement, and maintain classification/compensation functions including position management, classification, compensation, related policy and procedure development and compliance for positions subject to ( SHRA ) and exempt from ( EHRA ) the State Human Resources Act. The Director of Compensation provides direction, guidance, and interpretation of policies to the UNCW community on all compensation-related matters assuring that programs are compliant with federal and state regulations, internally equitable, externally competitive, and fiscally responsible. The incumbent will work with a high degree of independence under the general direction of the Associate Vice Chancellor for Human Resources.

The Director provides expertise, direction, consultation, guidance, and interpretation of policies to campus constituents and training on relevant matters. The Director oversees the day-to-day management of a three-person team, assigns work, sets direction, and plans and implements programs that meet campus needs and align with university strategic priorities. The position also participates in collaborative internal and external cross-functional initiatives and projects with campus leadership, UNC System Office, Office of State Human Resources and other agencies and universities.

The Director manages collaborative endeavors with the campus constituents including, revision of programs, services, policies and procedures. The Director serves as an internal change agent who is adept in collaboration and developing and/or implementing innovative best practices, processes, systems and/or system changes, programs, policies and/or procedures that meet emerging business needs and ensure market competitiveness. The position ensures work is performed with a sense of urgency and with a customer-centric focus.

Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to,
  • Policy Administration : Interprets and applies policies in usual and unusual/unique circumstances and makes determinations, in consultation when needed with senior HR leadership. Researches and initiates recommendations on policy and procedure issues. Drafts new or revised policies and regulations. Manages the institutional communication of applicable policies and procedures. Collaborates with various internal/external stakeholders, including the UNC System Office, the Provost’s Office, Academic Affairs Resource Management, the Office of General Counsel, the Office of Institutional Equity & Diversity, university business officers, academic deans and department heads, and other HR unit directors on policy changes and ensures required approvals. Oversees compensation-related policies and procedures regarding compensation limits and eligibility, FLSA regulations, and special pay categories like overtime, shift work, on-call, gap hours, travel time, etc.
  • Position Management and Classification : Directs the classification process for reviewing existing positions and establishing new positions at the university, ensuring positions meet the criteria for SHRA or EHRA status as required by agreements between the UNC System Office and the Office of State Human Resources. Ensures accurate assignment of JCAT (job category) designations and other information critical for tracking and reporting purposes. Makes final determination on exemption status ( FLSA and SHRA / EHRA ).
  • Reporting : Manages the preparation of HR action-related materials/reports submitted for consideration and approval by the UNCW Board of Trustees, UNC System Office, and/or UNC Board of Governors and ensures policy compliance and alignment with campus-delegated authority. Oversees the annual salary survey participation, participates in the Legislative Increase/Annual Raise Process (LI/ ARP ), UNC System Office monthly/quarterly reporting, annual compliance reporting for salary structures/ ranges, etc.
  • Projects/Committees : Serves as the primary representative for committees, initiatives, or special projects related to classification and compensation policies or operations. Provides campus-wide project management, and oversight and leads the implementation of related UNC System Office and the Office of State Human Resources policies, and other compensation and classification initiatives.
  • Training: Oversees the development and delivery of university-wide training and communication materials related to classification and compensation policy and procedures.
  • Leadership and Supervision: Consults with senior HR leadership to plan, develop and implement short and long-range plans for Classification and Compensation aligned with University strategic priorities. Motivates team to complete related job activities focused on high performance, collaboration, and innovation to ensure outstanding customer service. Cultivates and maintains strong partnerships with campus stakeholders and other colleagues across the University. Supervises three (3) professional staff positions., including assignment of work, performance management, hiring, development, discipline, separation, etc.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Graduation from a four-year college or university preferably with coursework applicable to HR management, human relations and/or business administration and four years of directly-related program development and personnel management experience demonstrating competencies needed to perform the work; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Degrees must be from appropriately accredited institutions.

Preferred education, professional skills and experience
  • Master’s degree in Human Resources, Public Administration, Business Administration or other closely related area
  • Management experience in the areas of classification and compensation
  • Extensive knowledge of University, state, and federal policies, rules and regulations including theories and best practices in the areas of classification and compensation
  • Project management experience
  • Technical knowledge and competence using Microsoft Office Suite (ie. Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
  • Demonstrated ability to extract data from systems, apply data functions (ie. vlookups, pivots, array formulas), analyze data and prepare reports
  • High degree of professional independence to exercise judgment when administering personnel programs and processes, in analyzing, interpreting, and applying policy, and in communicating with campus leaders
  • Broad knowledge of accepted/best practices, the ability to conceptualize broad operational concepts and issues to understand complex and dynamic structures, assess operations and impact, to guide and initiate new approaches and strategies
  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communications skills to cultivate and maintain excellent working relationships with campus constituents
  • Strong critical thinking and problem solving skills to resolve business challenges, develop business solutions, and foster an engaged, collaborative, and knowledgeable campus community
  • Relevant professional certification(s) such as SHRM -CP, SHRM - SCP, PHR, SPHR, CCP, etc.
