The Austin College Department of Music invites applications for the position of Director of Bands with rank of Assistant Professor of Music. This is a continuing, non-tenure track position. The position will begin August 2023. Austin College has a diverse student body and is committed to the same in the hiring process. The search committee is especially interested in candidates who, through their research, teaching, and/or service, will contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community.

 

Essential Functions:

  • Serve as Director for the Austin College Wind Symphony and the AC ‘Roo Band (pep band). Teach applied lessons to majors, minors, and non-majors in the area of the applicant’s instrumental specialty. Fulfill classroom teaching expectations associated with an appointment as an assistant professor in music, including courses in music education, conducting and other classes that fit the successful applicant’s qualifications. Maintain an active level of professional engagement. Participate in departmental recruiting activities, especially those required to build and maintain an active instrumental music program. This will include building professional relationships with high school band directors in our region. Establish and maintain other small instrumental ensembles as expertise, load, and student interest allows, possibly including chamber music and jazz ensembles.

 

Position Qualifications

  • Doctorate or ABD preferred. Master’s degree in music required with an emphasis in music education, and/or instrumental music and conducting. A minimum of two years conducting experience at the college level or a minimum of five years directing at the high school level is required.
